Hi

Can I have fibre installed at a place that I am renting?
Or does the owner have to go through the whole process?

If I can do it myself, through who can I do it?

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

Greetings

Yes you can, same as getting a Telkom line when renting. Just make sure you are going to be staying there for the duration of the contract.

Random question - how does the installation work - do they bring a fibre cable into the house, or is it only fibre up to a point.

Not Sure, the fibre point in my complex is in the man hole right in front of my garage. So uncertain as well

Do it, get it installed, just don't damage anything and if there is drilling required speak to owner first! If everything done can be reversed with no damage then I cannot see a problem. Also don't sign a 2 year contract with telkom if possible, use a ISP like webafrica or afrihost on a month to month basis. Especially if you renting!

What most of the providers do is run fibre up to an ONT (optical network terminal) or fibre switch in your house, which you would then connect your router to via cat5 ethernet.

My installation before router, grey Ethernet cable goes to router. I just stuck it to wall with hot glue, installer refused to do it.

Yeah you can. My contract clearly states I may make any modifications be it for DSTV, Antenna installations or broadband as long as when the time comes when I vacate the property it is restored to the original state I found it in.

I HIGHLY doubt any landlord would refuse as it would be a great selling point fibre being already installed....

So from the Home owners and renters contract point I may yes and got permission.
If I want to apply now, does the owner have to be involved with the paper work though? Or can I do it all myself?
How will the line rental work? Surely that can't be on my name. Or is there no rental fee?

No the owner does not have to get involved, as mentioned before you are a natural person in the eyes of the law.

You pay for the line, you pay for installation, you pay for the monthly fees associated, you apply for everything.

Think of it this way, if you get Telkom LTE, you take out the contract not the owner of the house. Only difference is LTE is mobile and fibre is fixed.

If you sign a 2 year contract and leave after one year then Telkom will come after you to collect out-standing money.

But LTE is not fixed, there is no line rental involved or any alteration to the property.
With Fibre is there any line rental involved. Or is it once off installation fee and then pay the ISP from there?

Fibre is a once off installation fee. "line rental" is included in the price you pay your ISP.

When you cancel with the ISP and leave the property the fibre will be disconnected. The actual line and ONT will remain behind in the house for the next renter to make use of.

The rental being included in the ISP cost makes sense now. Thanks

Think of this, how many times have you seen this in a house that you renting from an owner.

You find that the previous tenants wanted ADSL and this was left behind after they left.

Except when they start drilling holes and stuff
