Ok, so im trying to install the java jdk on Kubuntu. i downloaded the .bin file from the java site, then attempted to install it. i followed the instructions, running the .bin from the terminal. the terms and conditions appeared which i accepted. it then said unpacking and checksumming. but after that i got an error saying the file was corrupted. so i redownloaded it but same problem. then tried the rpm file and that too was corruptd. im totally lost as how to get the jdk installed. i dnt have internet access on the pc with kubuntu so dont advise me on any methods involving that. i downloaded the file on another pc and movd it across using a flash drive. so that could be the prob but i doubt it. so can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks in advanced

The .bin file is a wrapped bash script AFIAK. Your "corruption" is likely a windows dos UTF issue. Not sure how you download it etc. try download straight to the flash drive for starters. Just make sure you dont give it windows char set "coodies". Try a dos2unix for on the current .bin, may or may not help. Downloads don't just get corrupt like in the old dial-up days.

You didn't mention your ubu version, for my jaunty server I have access to atm:

$ apt-cache depends sun-java6-jdk
sun-java6-jdk
Depends: sun-java6-bin
Depends: libc6
Depends: libx11-6
|PreDepends: debconf
PreDepends: <debconf-2.0>
cdebconf
debconf
Suggests: sun-java6-demo
Suggests: openjdk-6-doc
Suggests: sun-java6-source

Ok, problem solved. Seems like my flash drive was the problem. Tried another one and java now installed.
