Installing XP on a SATA drive

Hi all

I can't seem to find a "replacement" for the original drivers that came with my motherboard: ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe (NForce4).

XP won't detect the drive, unless I install the SATA drivers for the NForce4 controller (I think).

I have lost the original driver disk (stiffy) that came with my motherboard and am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction so that I can create a new disk and install the drivers from it during XP setup.

Thanks!

well firstly you should have a problem with a sata drive im sure

make sure in your bios its not set to raid

use the cd to make a disk

put the cd in put the stiffy in and boot from your asus cd

It's not. I have 2 SATA drives running already. When you install XP on a new one, it cannot detect the SATA drive.

hmm, I installed Win 2K on SATA drives without a hitch couple of times, well not on an Asus mobo, but still, wonder why do you need SATA drivers, the OS should have build in support for them

Here is a link to the mobo page, click on Downloads on the left, and see if you can find what you are looking for:
http://www.asus.com.tw/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=0&model=1127&modelmenu=1

No idea. It's not an isolated problem though.

Thanks for the URL, but I the drivers I am looking for aren't there.

Limited OEM driver support is available with F6 during Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 setup.

When you are installing Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on a new computer or on a computer that has the latest SCSI or IDE controller technology, you may have to use an OEM device driver to support, for example, a new mass storage controller, to continue with the installation.

Try looking for a controller driver from the harddrive manufacturers website, I've got an nforce mobo and haven't had to use a controller driver before.

Double check to see if raid isn't enabled in the BIOS.

raid is set in his bios it must be

windows will pick up all sata drivers

the only time it wont is when they are in raid

your bios is set to raid
go look around your bios and set it to sata

Yeah, I've got the ASUS A8N SLi Deluxe as well..didn't need the F6 Disk to install on a SATA drive or detect other SATA drives. Make sure your SATA drives are plugged into the black sata ports on the board and not the red ones. The red = RAID.

They're in the SATA [black] ports. They always have been. I've never been able to install Windows XP onto a blank/new SATA drive, withouth installing the drivers (F6) off a stiffy.

Weird - mine worked without a hitch on my new Seagate 200gb SATA, fresh drive, fresh install. Same mobo, maybe different bios revision or something?

this is rather simple.
his windows xp, when in textmode, doesnt have drivers for this sata controller.
it is not only a raid issue, your controller can be in ahci mode also and require drivers.
also, depending on if you original xp disk has sp1 or sp2 slipstreamed you may or may not require drivers.
the easiest thing to do, instead of arguing the toss, is just to feed the drivers at the f6 prompt.
Please be aware, as I have come to realise, that just because it works for me, doesnt mean it will work for you, and just because me/you have done it this way a zillion times doesnt mean another user has an identical experience.

If sata controller is old-ish, or is set to legacy IDE mode in bios, then you generally do not need f6 drivers.
if sata controller is newish, or set to raid or ahci mode in bios, then you will *probably* need f6 drivers.

Hey .geek Check out this Link

Try and download the raid drivers and make the stiffy, see if you can't use those drivers at the windows setup F6, You'll see on the screenshots if you scroll down, there's a driver that says Nvidia Nforce Storage Controller, use that one to get windows setup going :)

Hope it works dude
