South Africans must start thinking about total grid collapse

Several South African insurers — including the state-owned Sasria that covers special risks like riots, strikes, and terrorism — are excluding damages related to the possible failure of Eskom's national grid.

If the grid collapses, GIB Insurance Brokers says it would likely result in a catastrophic event with possible looting and civil unrest, which could lead to severe infrastructure damage across the country.

What do you mean start? We've been hearing about total grid collapse at least once a month for long enough that I doubt anyone hasn't started thinking about it.

There is no disaster management for a grid collapse. There will be no food, No water, No fuel and no work. You will basically not be able to survive if the power is not restored within a week.

What are the insurance companies doing in that regard? Besides saving themselves a lot of money by taking themselves out of the equation?

We all saw what a relative few did in less than a week of riots. Take away power, water, fuel, banking, internet, communication - for days to weeks and the destruction will be staggering. Assuming there's even a grid left to switch back on. It will take decades to recover, if ever.

The most valuable commodity will be Ammo.

Cool, reduce my insurance premiums...

Oh, wait insurance companies work on the "our bread is buttered on both sides" principle.

I can promise you that there will be no more squatter camps.

It's not about saving themselves money. If the grid collapsed it would bankrupt the insurance industry. There isn't enough money to underwrite that level of claims. They barely covered the riots

and no insurance companies.
