My All Risks cover (Santam) says "Unspecified items not exceeding 10% of the sum insured per item", which of course includes specified items and there is a fair amount of jewellery and watches so the total is over R150k.

All Risks covers items within the boundary of South Africa, hence the term "All Risks". However, it restricts me to personal items, for instance a satellite signal meter is insured under a business policy, as are portable tools that I sometimes carry

I was told that if I had worded the claim differently, ie accidental damage instead of saying it just stopped working, then the claim would have been paid. Santam's assessor is aware of Samsung's repair facility. So I now know what to do next time, although this will probably never happen

Wait, so they're denying your claim based on your wording rather than the actual fault?!?!

That sounds like a job for the Ombudsman to deal with in my opinion.

Samsung were amazing. They took one look, plugged it into a USB lead, printed a form for me to sign and gave me a new phone in the box. Total time 20 mins. They even found the name of the dealer in Leicester, UK from whom I bought the phone in April and commented that I got it cheap

Errrr the S4 is covered with a 2 year warranty against water damage and cracked screen afaik.

@OP Thanks for having the generosity of heart to say "Yes" and lend your cellphone to a friend. You make the world a better place.

Don't sensationalise his words. He said never lend expensive items to friends. ie, If you have a cheaper option to lend them, do that rather. He did not say screw the world and only be in it for yourself. Lend nothing to anyone and your life will be better.
