Ag this war of CPU Cycles will go on and on.

You will always have your AMD and ATi fan.
You will always have your Intel and NVidia fan.
Or whatever combination you like - as long as its Cross-SLI-ing-ish.

In my opinion, thank gawd that there are only two mainstreams to choose from. A while back you had S3, Trident, Tseng, Matrox, 3Dfx etc etc, all competing for the same space in the graphics market and the net result was a whole bunch of games and CAD programs being incompatible with the majority of them. Now you can choose between something with an ATi or NVidia flavour and your multi-monitor junkies can have their Matrox Parhelias.

Same with CPUs. It’s a good thing that AMD finally got its heat issues resolved because they really make descent enthusiast CPUs with insane over-clocking capabilities.
Intel makes descent performing CPUs right out the box – but that’s it. Over-clock it, and it will most probably fail and the Intel Techs somehow ALWAYS know you tinkered with it...koebaai warranty.

the hardocp article is getting quite a lot of flack today. For the time being, a pinch of salt is necessary.

there are about 100 other reviews online for conroe this morning, so see what the other guys say and then come to your own (balanced) opinion.
not occusing hardopc of anything mind you, but they have a sister article dealing with conroe in application performance which paints a totally different picture

yeah, true.
of course, gaming being gpu bound, wouldnt reflect any enormous benefits from a cpu change. the [H] article didnt exactly explain this properly, but, oh well.

the price difference for the X6800 is mainly due to being a bin picked item, and then having it multiplier unlocked, for up and down multi changes. Still not $500 worth extra, but to some people it may benefit. If you arent going to mess about and overclock it then the e6600 is so much better value for money.

Wen do you think core 2 duo will actually be available for purchasing in S.A?

The entry level Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86GHz 2MB) is $183 which is like R1500, the X2 3800+ and X2 4200+ get beaten by the Core 2, and considering that a AM2 X2 3800+ is at least R3000 currently, I know who gets my vote!

I'm sure AMD will be announcing major price cuts though...

if i told you last week you can get an fx62 for half price, I am sure I would have had plenty takers.

now, this week I am saying you can get the same/better performance from a e6600 than an fx62, for half the price.

Intel have a good one here...no doubt about it.

I think it's great, even for AMD fans like me. AMD has been resting on its laurels for far too long now, and they need a wake-up. You have to be better or cheaper to compete, and AMD has lost the "better" aspect; they'd better be cheaper now.

I'm happy that AMD are finally getting a bit of a hiding. I have a high end AMD rig, and it's sad to know that even a E6600 Conroe chip will destroy my rig. Nevertheless, i'd love to get my hands on a conroe just for some benchmarking and overclocking.

Hm, well for me it's all a matter of pricing anyway.
Most people don't have the cash, and/or don't need that much power.
I bought a A64 3200+ Venice E6 for bout R750, overclocked to 2500Mhz, and a 3 month old 2nd-hand 7900gt with Zalman vf-900 for R2400, OC'd it to 550/1600, both super stable.
Foxconn 61508KMA-8KRS mobo +/- R500.
Even my 2x512mb Corsair Value Select is OC'd a bit, +/- 208MHz ;)
19" LCD, DVI, 8ms for R2100, and my 'little' rig runs everything just perfectly Maxed out.
Work-wise, Macromedia studio etc. opens/closes/processes in a jiffy, ..I mean c'mon, very few people really require such power!? ..and for so much cash!?
What a waste.. well, ..my opinion at least.. :)

I don't know..... that 6600 sounds promising. :) Sorry killa, I might just switch over.

But not this year. I'll wait till next year to decide what I'm gonna do.
