The first 8 core CPU for desktops with DDR4 support is coming in the 2nd half of this year, will require new platform as well (X99). Looks pretty impressive but will probably be way too expensive. Not sure what we can do with 8 cores except run a bunch of Virtual Machines. DDR4 support is nice though and the smaller models should be a bit more affordable.

Multimedia.

We've been running 8 cores since 2010.

Gaming. Modern day gaming engines are built for 8 cores. DDR4 brings lower power consumption and higher frequencies.

Its 6 cores ( but running hyper thread, so 12 in theory) and we use it to do CFD models...looking to upgrade to something bigger as the model (singular) takes 16hrs to render for a 30second clip.

No, the i7 is 4 cores.

Only one line of the Extreme Edition's i7's are 6 cores.

Not too excited about the X99... Since no mortal can afford it. DDR4 however.... That's gonna be interesting!

Not sure, there is no mention of Hyper threading. It's still early days and there's a lot of speculation in the article around Flex IO and supported SATA / USB etc.

DDR4 was what I found the most promising though.
