Intelsat files for bankruptcy

Intelsat, one of the oldest commercial satellite companies in the world, has filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code.

In a statement issued this week, Intelsat said that it is using the Chapter 11 proceedings to restructure the company's finances and enhance its liquidity.

Doubt there would be much risk to DSTV though as someone would buy the assets if they (Intelsat) go under, probably including current tronsponder leases

Yeah but there is a massive ground station management that goes alone with it that could be problematic.

They are in trouble for a number of reasons, one of those is the expected increase in sat based high throughput capacity for corporate and govt of circa 50% per year - that's pushed prices down, a FB/EUTELSAT deal puts data at somewhere around USD200/Mbps/month mark (less than 25% of the Intelsat price point for deals).

The reality of streaming is also expected to result in sat TV operators signing deals for less capacity as they intend to deliver primarily through streaming, MPEG4 is also reducing bandwidth consumption... a double whammy.

The future of Sat is not dead, but definitely a little bleak for now.
