Anyone in the valley tried to contact a ISP/fibre provider about FTTB in Franschhoek?
Nearest fibre is @ Val de Vie / Simondium as far as I can tell.
If we wait for natural roll-out, it will take forever.

I'm sure other businesses / wine farms will also be interested, maybe we as a collective can approach a ISP for something sooner?

We are currently engaging Telkom for FTTH (for Gated Communities) at the edge of Kylemore. Telkom's fibre network already runs next to us towards Pniel. DFA only runs to Simondium from the Paarl side. :/

lol good luck there. Rather get LTE.

LTE is spotty at best and not a feasible solution as primary connection. This was tested across all networks....

To give you an idea, we don't even get proper radio reception here from the big national stations.

I saw DFA's network, but they are not returning on my enquiries.
I'm sure a group of businesses here will foot most of the installation bill, so it's a sure win for the fibre installer/ISP.
We can't be without internet again for 3 weeks like in October last year.

It's unfortunately not as simple as one would think.

We recently ran a backbone in the Bottelary hills. It's connected to our DC in Teraco via a Metroclear layer 2 fibre connection, at tremendous expense. We've done this not only as a FTTF (Fibre To The Farm) proof of concept, but also to provide the towers we have there with stable backhaul back to Teraco.

Here's the fibre coverage map that project.

This isn't like in town where you can put down a little box on the pavement and it's left alone. Out there you have to build fortresses like the one below just to house junction boxes.

So far, three clients have signed up. One is a FTTB user taking 30Mb. The other two are FTTH users taking 5Mb connections, milking those connections for every bit of data they can.

During the canvassing stage everyone we spoke to was interested. We had 30 sets of service application forms in hand before the first pick went into the ground, but as soon as it's time to put their money where their mouths are, suddenly individuals and businesses are "in contract" to a WISP or an ADSL, or can't afford the install amount.

We would only consider doing something like this again if there was at least 50% buy in from the community and everyone paid up front for installation.

You could always consider doing a contract and building the install fee into the contract. That would make it more attractive.

As it stands, more than 50% of the cost of each home fibre installation is subsidised.

People are happy to pay R2950 for an antenna on their roof and a router / AP in their home, on which we can make a profit. Yet they do not want to pay R1885 for an install that we will make a loss of at least R2,000 on.

Who would own the fibre then and any future proceeds generated from it?

Your primary objective was to provide backhaul for your own equipment, and secondly you can offer service to interested parties.
In this instance you will be guaranteed with a growing subscriber base, the transition from copper to fibre will happen naturally over time.

It will be interesting to know what the costs involved will be to get fibre to town.
Maybe we should install it and lease it to Sir Richard Branson for stupid money....

We're moving offices there - would definitely be interested in a collective approach.

Just a update on the fibre rollout in Franschhoek.

Earlier this month I saw on Openserve's website that Franschhoek is "under consideration" for fibre (20/40 Mbps)
Today I saw a Openserve bakkie driving around town. Looks to be sooner rather than later folks!:D

Late last year the FWV did a survey of interested parties, maybe they got the ball rolling for us.

Hi portcullis,

I was wondering if you guys have investigated the feasibility of fibre in Franschhoek? There are quite a few gated communities and businesses in the area that I am sure will jump at the opportunity to move from at times unreliable ADSL.

Any update on this anyone?

We are based in Franschhoek and is desperately waiting for Fibre.
Definitely looking at the very least at 100mbps line.

No updates yet on fibre breaking ground here in the valley.

If someone is interested going the "Air fibre" route, I can put you in contact with our supplier.
With the copper thief's doing their rounds again a few weeks back, I'm sure Telkom will take notice...

Geez, I sure hope they do. I don't think the fiber installers know the amount of uptake they would get in the valley but i also guess a feasibility study would be difficult without signatures which would be very difficult to obtain.

I'm moving close to wemmershoek school and looking at options for a stable connection, how is vodacom LTE in the region? Signal booster? I really dont want to uptake the cost of installing copper when fiber might be an option in the "near" future (fingers crossed). also if you can get me the contact details of "air fibre" i would be grateful? How is the connection and your experience though? I've heard mixed (mostly bad) feelings of such a offering.

Replied to @TheGoosen in PM with supplier details.

Just for all to know, LTE in Franschhoek village is not an option at all for any business as a primary connection.
