What is it meat-packing plants specifically? Outbreaks were also recorded in the US in meat-packing plants as well as some other countries.

Meat packing plants usually have wet, refrigerated processing areas with inside air being recirculated. Kind of like an enclosed winter room.

Other states, including California, South Carolina, Utah, Mississippi and Louisiana, have seen a surge in caseload.

Some governors have said they may be forced to announce new lockdown measures.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday that the state is facing a “massive outbreak” in the coronavirus pandemic and that some new local restrictions may be needed to protect hospital space for new patients.

In a series of midday interviews with television stations, Abbott said Texas would again pass 5,000 new coronavirus cases and more than 4,000 hospital patients with COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. Texas passed both thresholds for the first time Tuesday.

“There is a massive outbreak of COVID-19 across the state of Texas," Abbott said in an interview with KFDA-TV in Amarillo.

Coronavirus: New York imposes quarantine on eight US states

It comes as a US university predicts 180,000 US deaths from the virus by October.

Currently, those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Washington and Utah, the governor of New York state Andrew Cuomo told reporters.

People coming from those states - including returning New York, New Jersey and Connecticut residents - will be asked to quarantine upon arrival for 14 days.

Anyone found breaking the quarantine could face fines of $1,000 (£800) rising to $5,000 for repeated violations, Mr Cuomo said. He added that US states would be added or taken off the quarantine list depending on the number of new cases per 100,00 people or the rate of positive tests.

"This is a smart thing to do," New Jersey's Governor Phil Murphy said.

"We have taken our people, the three of us from these three states, through hell and back, and the last thing we need to do right now is subject our folks to another round."
