Are government officials relying on the public healthcare system and similar processes as the GP with this threat?

There are way more hospitals than that list. These are pre-selected ones for now. If more is needed, we have more, many many more.

I amended by post.

Can those ''many many more'' hospitals handle something like this? Do we have the resources to equip them for this? As I pointed out in a previous post, we already lack ICU capacity so imagine overloading it.

Provinces are responsible for health. Currently only three provinces approach the international recommendation of ICU beds per 100,000. (Hodgson and Hardcastle 2013). Five out of nine provinces have fewer than 1: 100,000 beds. (Hodgson and Hardcastle 2013). Most ICUs in the private sector function as open ICUs as opposed to the state sector where ICUs are closed (Gopalan, D 2013, pers. comm., 30 June). Telemedicine has a very limited role, but would be useful where care is often remote. (Gopalan, D 2013, pers. comm., 30 June).

The challenges for critical care in the country are the health burden of infectious diseases and lack of infrastructure and resources – ICU beds, personnel, equipment and drugs. Inadequate transport, portering and laboratories also make functioning extremely difficult. Distances between referral centres and the lack of appropriate transfer facilities also impede care. (Gopalan, D 2013, pers. comm., 30 June).

I say again, this is why people want to get out in front of it. If Lombardy and their top-5% health system is in flames, you'd be foolish not to try and learn from that and avert a potential disaster in your own backyard.

By doing selective testing and putting people in self isolation?

You don't see the problem here? There is no getting in front of it the way they are doing ti currently. It's actually too late already.

The way this thread is going we should rather opt to open a fight chat thread. Just like in the old days with torrent chat rooms.

Can I go to China or Taiwan? I mean will I get a visa?
They seem to have a handle on how to control this thing.

I don't think our private hospitals have more than 20 isolation beds among all of them.
The newer ones can instantly convert.
Chris Barnard hospital has about 8 private rooms on medical ward 2.
About 9 at medical ward 1.
About 5 isolation rooms in ICU
About 6 isolation rooms in CCU

The private rooms are routinely used for isolation purposes, all having negative pressure ventilation ability.
In total they could easily place 28 patients in isolation.

Problem is who pays?
Private rooms start at about R5000 per day - room only, excluding a latex glove or piece of paper
