Certainly not because of vaccinations as the rollout had just started.Because beta, a less contageous variant, could not find enough hosts to sustain itself and it died out or moved elsewhere once approximately 50% had been infected by alpha or beta.
I would hazard a guess that this is exactly what is happening to Delta right now.

Recently travelled to Europe and yes need a PCR to return. I don't really understand because apparently their is an option to do an antigen on arrival BUT Swiss airways wanted to see my PCR test at check-in. Anyway was pretty easy if a bit expensive to get it done in Germany. Assuming this...
