Botswana mutation:

Does more infectious mean more dangerous? That's unknown at the moment. Also will be interesting to see how natural immunity fares against this (as it was exposed to the wholeb virus, not just the spike)
Current jabs train the immune system to recognise an older version of the spike, and lots of changes to this protein make it harder for the vaccinated people to fight it off.

Unknown. We will only know when we start seeing the hospital admissions.

Why don't you reference an article from before August 2021? You might get even higher than 50-60% as proof of your claim.
Studies based on the prevalent variant at the time? Sure.

They still didn't claim 100%. And at this time their studies were based on data from the Alpha variant.

Are you a Dr?

Im a pharmacist.

Is the new variant immune to the vaccine?

I would say no. It may bypass the vaccine but the vaccine will still offer protection to a certain degree depends what has changed in the virus. We wont know until we know the finer details of the variant and see what happens in our hospitals. So we will have to wait and see no other way.

Possibly/eventually. Even the modern flu vaccine doesn't protect you from "the flu", just the worst variants of the new season. Which I guess is why we're going to need another booster in 6-12mths.

Immunity is never binary, protection may fall to lower levels and in the worst case to very low levels. But nobody really will know right now, they can test it in a lab petri dish and observe how much it affects antibody neutralisation but that is also just one aspect of immunity.

And people want to know why there is hesitancy on the vaccine? Cause take the vaccine and life will get back to normal, guess that was a lie.
It is bizzare and you are right it is sending the wrong message. They should follow what the UK is doing, the UK is not panicking about the new case rises because their hospitals are coping. Portugal's new cases are rising quite sharply but their hospitalisations are looking really quite manageable:

Exactly. In most cases if a vaccinated person gets infected it's just like a booster. Sure if hospitals are overflowing then do something but otherwise what's the point?

Same applies to our large proportion of previously infected does it not?

Patients in the hospitals are mostly unvaccinated anyway. Some of the hospitals are feeling the pressure it would seem.
