International roaming data rate: R534,477 per GB

...but the best advice may still be to purchase a prepaid SIM when you arrive in a country to avoid bill shock.

Spread the word, it is the safest and the best option out there.

in 2007 i went to estonia. vodacom is a completely useless company, because for two days i couldn't do anything - after phoning them and confirming at the airport's shop and smsing "roam on" to their number.

arrived in estonia and my dad had to phone them again and get sms activated. phone calls and data didn't work (which is what i wanted) but i still had three calls go to voicemail (which was R15 each or so) after i cancelled all diverts.

always make sure you disable whatever you don't need overseas. with vodacom, make sure, then confirm then confirm again and then get another confirmation amd then get someone at home to follow up and fix what they didn't do.

thats pretty obvious , this is not unique to sa operators , rather buy a new sim or as easter bunny says double check u have the right settings i'm sure there is a sms to email service u could use when ur away

i wonder if anyone actually knowingly uses roaming data when they go overseas? those prices are ridiculous, even for tenderpreneurs.

Can't wait for the Vodacom spin-doctors to come out with a press release along the line of at only R131,000 per GB Vodacom's roaming is the cheapest in South Africa…

Just as a comparison, outside the arrivals hall at Sydney airport is a Vodafone stall, and you can buy a 3GB sim there for AUD30 !!!

And, crazy enough, you can get the same 3GB sim for AUD25, if you take it with a dongle!

I did the latter, but never used the dongle, I had a better one with me.

Pretty cheap, why would you even think of roaming?

Just ordered some French sim cards from eBay for an upcoming trip to France.

Will overseas sim cards work on a locked phone? I thought that what a locked phone was, only works on a MTN, or Vodacom...etc.

My wife just recently got back from Malawi, being their for a week with her blackberry and was hit with a bill from MTN for R3000.00. She hardly used the phone as it it was in her bag most of the time.

In my opinion this is totally illegal, the phone should warn you that you could incur charges and press yes if you want to carry on. The fact that we just automatically get billed for these charges on accounts is absurd and giving a charge for services we did not intend for or even want. automatic downloads are a pain in the @rse

Locked phones in SA are a thing of the past.

We don't have locked phones in SA. So overseas SIM cards will work in our phones, but our SIM cards might not work in overseas phones.

YHO, that much for 1GB roaming data! Jeepers, thats even worse than ridiculous, surely the Wi-Fi internet on that country is cheaper and has more value than this??
