Hi guys

I am getting mixed responses from telkom help regarding international roaming. The call center says it is not possible while Twitter support says it is. Has anyone managed to get it activated?

Thanks!

Firstly "calm Centre" is not what I would call Telkom

Then, why not get a local sim that side? It would be cheaper / easier... Or get a cheap dual sim phone if you absolutely need it

I basically just need SMS's to work. I don't see why TM cant activate it for prepaid. Voda and MTN has it

Roaming is handy to see who is calling. If you don't pickup and voice mail box is disabled, it doesn't costs any cent. Remember to reset all diverts and disable voice mailbox before leaving SA. USSD code is ##002#. For any other purpose it is Whatsapp, Telegram and Skype with local SIM.

One thing breaks this rule: Cell C WiFi calling. It works the best, as the service is transparrent.

EDIT: I see your message about SMS. If you leave for US, remember that Telkom has no agreements with some US partners for SMS's (or agreements are defective), it is in their FAQ. Double check to be sure.

Thanks for the info. Very much aware of the tips you gave. I just need some clarity on the prepaid situation with Telkom. Doesn't make sense to have to fill out a application form

After my last trip I saw that there is a provider that does cheap international roaming sims. Both data an call rates were way better than what we have here.

Do you specifically need calls / sms when abroad?
Else just get an intl. sim at the airport for whatsapp & data & outgoing calls.

Install a decent vpn before entering uae as WhatsApp calls blocked. Imo works perfectly though. Get a Du or Etisalat sim at the airport on arrival if you're going to be there a few days. A couple of malls and neighbourhoods have free WiFi

So to explain my situation, I needed the sms roaming to contact family who is traveling with me.

I am then also looking for a data solution for Uber, email and travel browsing. Preferably also some local minutes. What would you guys suggest?
