International roaming prices: Vodacom vs MTN vs Cell C vs 8ta

Would whatsapp and viber work over wifi even if you don't setup your sim for roaming. with those prices I bet it would be way cheaper to buy a second device and use it as a portable hotspot. Though not sure what are the long term affects to a man's junk to wifi radiation.

R200 a MB... they must have laid the international connection with gold lines.

Boggle the mind that you can get prepaid data overseas, then skype call with video to SA... and it's cheaper than just a cell-to-cell phone call in SA... and somehow they can justify R200 a MB?

Unless you have a corporate device with approved roaming, this is just retarded to even remotely consider. Kudo's to MyBB for highlighting this.

Rather get a SIM in the country you visit. A colleague visited Birmingham recently and got an unlimited-data Virgin Mobile prepaid SIM costing 3-Pounds a day.

Its an international issue, hence all smartphones have an option for data roaming on and off.

The really frustrating thing is that when you're travelling overseas, it's really useful to have access to things like Google Maps, Foursquare, Yelp, to help you get around, find decent pubs and restaurants etc.

However, I think that Vodacom's rates are cheaper than that. In the UK for example, if you use the Vodafone network, I'm sure it's "only" R17,00 per MB.

This is a worldwide problem not just a South African one.

I learned the hard way that having a smart phone like S3 that constantly checks for updates (or doing stuff on the Internet) can be very costly. The worst is that you on know the implication a month or so later after you're back:twisted:
