Roaming is going to cost you an arm and a leg. Get a prepaid sim card when you're there and use the local system.

Unless you WANT to come back home with a R25k+ bill waiting for you for that 1 meg of data used that one time your gran sent you a picture on whatsapp

This unless you really need to receive calls / sms to your ZA number. A lot of countries sell SIM cards at the airport loaded with data + airtime. Whatsapp will still work on your phone with a different sim.

Just get a SIM when you land.

Cost me R120 for 4Gb of data and multiple minutes and free wifi and stuff when I landed in Sri Lanka and valid for 30 days.

Vodacom barely gives me a gig of data for the same money.

With stuff like WhatsApp where you can swop the sim underneath it any time roaming is less and less of a need.

And if you really want to enable SMS roaming and buy a mobile hotspot thingy to work with a local sim.

The entire purchase will be a drop in the ocean over the roaming charges.
