Hey guys

Just need some advice

My setup I have is a a billion VDSL modem router connected in bridge mode with DHCP off connected to my Asus AC68u that does the PPPoE connection. Then I have a 5 port unmanaged switch connected to one of the ports on the ac68u. When I just connect the link between the switch and the router it's still connects to Internet. Just when I connect a device to the switch it loses Internet connectivity.

I think it might be DHCP, but for the life of me I have been struggling with this on random days.

Asus have the latest Merlin firmware, anything else that could be the problem guys or does anyone have a fix for me.

A client bought a cheap 5 port 10/100 switch from Makro which gave problems when they tried to use it with long (+10m) network cables, plug one in and the network would die. Replaced it with a decent 8 port D-Link and the problems vanished.

I would plug direct into the router and make sure all is okay. Then into the switch. If it then fails the problem is with the switch

I've used ASUS DSL-AC68U's and many other ASUS routers and DSL modem/routers with D-Link unmanaged switches and long cable runs without problem, both in native and bridged mode, on DSL and Fibre connections. As long as there is one and only one DHCP server on your network, I doubt it has anything to do with your ASUS or Billion products. It could be worth switching out the cable(s) as well, maybe try CAT 5E/6 shielded Ethernet with the cheapo switch? Also, I have had D-Link switches get damaged by lightning and causing all segments connected to that switch to stop working, did this perhaps happen with the cheapo switch. Lastly, does your device perhaps use a static local IP address and does your DHCP server expect that? No IP conflicts on your network?

The easiest solution is generally the right one, that being DHCP with IP conflicts, best to look into that first before doing anything else.
