A convicted internet fraudster has been placed under investigation in Nigeria for allegedly masterminding a "mega scam" from a maximum-security prison worth at least $1m (£773,000).
Anti-corruption officials said Hope Olusegun Aroke used a "network of accomplices" for the fraud. He was arrested in 2012 and has been serving a 24-year sentence at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.

Did you read the article or just the title? It is not only the fraud part. Actually that is the none interesting part. The criminal was supposed to serve a 20+ years sentence in a maximum security, Nigerian prisoners yet he went home as he pleased.
Please show me the link where a inmate from a maximum security US prison manage to go in and out at will.

This whole cultural appropriation nonsense with prisons in Africa is clearly not working out.

Yes, there were certain aspects of this case I know quite well. Some reports even state it was $100m :)

The US cases (plural) are different. In at least one of these somebody died. The local case had some rather unique things about it as well. All have their WTF moments.

This is not talking away from the story, rather abuse of electronic devices by people removed from civilized society but such removal undermined by our marvelous communications.
But a preliminary investigation found he still had access to the internet.

Yet authorities people contemplate putting jammers in the prisons, the folks driving nearby go beserk, they might have their precious calls drop. Or just perhaps, just perhaps, they have an accident and not be able to phone the emergency services.

The problem is that we, the good people, are in prison and the criminals are free to do as they please. There is very little convictions and solving of crimes these days as the criminals are better equipped, better armed, and have the law on their side let alone the insiders of law enforcement working with them.

The so-called "good" people are turning out to be history's idiots. They kill their own offspring, indulge in selfish hedonism and are being outbred. The future belongs to those that show up and that does not necessarily mean they are "good".

Well Kudos to him....Useless prison system. As is the case with them all...

Seen this one all over now... it's prolific!
What I don't understand is why these scammers are not traced and arrested - why are they allowed to perpetrate their scams.
Don't tell me that they cannot be traced.

They are. Just here by us it does not make the news who rather post something that is sensational. The owner of Hydro Lounge in JHB.

This scammer has nothing on the ANC - they regularly/consistently pull of much bigger heists.
$26 billion that is known of in the past three years? https://www.ic3.gov/media/2019/190910.aspx

The USA is moering them. These guys are running from the US authorities, even from Nigeria to places like Dubai, South Africa etc. The world has suddenly become very small for them.
