I've been googling and not been getting anything constructive.

So if anyone could point me in the right direction or offer advice please.

What are the bandwidth requirements for a streaming station?
To start off with perhaps 2 hours a day.
Am I right in assuming that its going to need a static IP?
I need to know - how much bandwidth is per person listening in use.
How would I host such an endeavour? Server wise, web page wise.
Can it be done on local only bandwidth? I know that 5fm streams on local bandwidth.
But how would I go about setting up such an endeavour?
What kind of server am I looking at?

If anyone has any advice to offer it would be appreciated.

Its merely a concept I have for a station or broadcast.
Also does one need a broadcasting license or anything close to that to stream audio on the web?

TIA

What I want to know is why anyone would want to waste their time and bandwidth listening to internet radio, hoping that some of the music played will be stuff that they like. Dont we have our own collection of CD's to listen to.

Personally, I think internet radio is just a status thing for the owners of the station.

I think internet providers should allow us to receive/transmit internet radio for free, no bandwidth charges.... simply because it's supposed to be covered by our TV licence fees. :D

If that were I would encode data streams across the voice streams and do mass downloading for free. He he he.

The bandwidth requirements depend on the streaming quality. 64-128kbps is the norm, from what I can remember, and thus you would need approximately 130-150MB for a 2 hour session (over estimated from 112.5MB\2h to be safe). This is for uploading. However, you would need a 512Kb/4Mb line for that, which have a 256 and 384(becoming 640)Kbps upload speed respectively.
You would probably need a static IP for this, but check to be sure. They can get pretty expensive for the line speed you require.
You don't need an especially fast pc for this, just something that can handle the system requirements of the software you wish to use. This is about as much as I can help you

Thanks for all the responses - I'll certainly be reading up on all the links. Came across Shoutcast and have been reading a bit on that.

@ Balstrome - we're the only country left that actually has concerns about how we manage our bandwidth ;) :D

Us and the US. They are actually running behind on broadband speeds too. Average speed is 1.9Mbps. I thought being America (the richest and most powerful country in the world :D) they'd at least be somewhere up top with their broadband.

But they're being trumped by the Far East regarding broadband speeds.
