South African Internet pioneer stuck in Ukraine — describes evacuation from Kyiv

South African Internet pioneer Ronnie Apteker confirmed in a blog post on Monday evening that when Russia invaded Ukraine, he was in Kyiv with his family.

Apteker co-founded one of South Africa’s earliest commercial Internet service providers in 1993 with Philip Green, Tom Mcwalter, and Joe Silva — The Internet Solution (TIS).

Feel for the guy. Not a nice position to be in with a small child.

He is a man with the means to pack up and come back to SA or go somewhere else, wonder why he left it for so late.

Its better he cross to Moldova first and then on to Poland and not to Poland itself, as there is a huge traffic jam. Stay safe.

Unlike our president and government who now openly support the Russian invasion

And now, thanks to Elon Musk supplying Starlink services to all those areas, @RonnieApteker will be able to read your advice and take it to heart before a bullet pierces it.

Any update from Ronnie?

Hope he is okay and out of Ukraine

Didn't the US warn about the impending war months ago? Why are they only evacuating now? Maybe they just dismissed it as a The Boy Who Cried Wolf situation

Cos he listened to his wife, I made that mistake, once, as well
We all do, now, I let my wife think she is part of the major decisions all the time. But in the end I make it.

For example, in 2011, she wanted a Picanto. I did not. My choice was a second hand Xtrail. I had no plans to buy a Picanto, but we went to stealerahip, even asked about options etc. I just told her while viewing the car: pity the pram wont fit. Which was a big issue at the time. And we bought the Xtrail, which she loves btw.
