Hey forum people,

I've absolutely had it. I've had ADSL for the last 3 years. Switched service providers a few times. I'm happy with my provider now. But jeez, my Telkom ADSL line is the most unreliable useless piece of copper between two points that's ever existed. If my house was connected with a piece of string I swear I would have a better connection. Their site says my exchange can provide me with a 10mb line. Their technicians just laugh about it, saying I'll never get anything faster than 2mb due to xyz.

And now, since Eskom's started their load shedding, my line has lost what little stability it has. Every day, once the power comes back on, my router will take anywhere from 5 min to 5 days to reconnect...

I need a better way. There must be something more reliable. I used to be a heavy user, but now 200GB/m will keep me satisfied. I have some... streaming services, gaming and web browsing, and the occasional "data" to download. But 200GB seems to be more than all the wireless providers I've seen can offer.

Fibre coverage seems to be just out of reach - I live a few 100m behind Cape Gate mediclinic, but all the fibre seems to stop a few 100m away from me...

I can handle sitting in the dark, with a few candles, but I can't live disconnected from the web...

Please help?

I've replaced my modem already. Both modems don't connect. The modem shows the line stats: attenuation, data sync etc. but it just doesn't connect. I'm gonna try my old modem again just in case

Nope. Old modem shows a connection to the ADSL line also, but won't connect to a PPPoE provider. I've tried other free 1gb providers also. My feeling it's some part of Telkoms infrastructure.

Elbad,

Maybe the quick solution is to invest in a small UPS to keep everything during LOL (Lots of Loadshedding)!!!

But seriously, i have Neotel CDMA, waiting for LTE, but in the mean time the CDMA modem has built in battery, and last for the standard 2 hour stints.
Not good for streaming, Utube works so-so, so i would go for LTE (fixed) uncapped from Neotel, 15G's per mo nths needs a hawkeye these days. Have lots of friends how are on Netflix with cancelled DSTV using 2 or 4 Mbps lines. But you gota be in good coverage.

So I got Sonic to come and do a LoS test for wireless, but apparently I don't really qualify. So I guess I'm stuck with my useless ADSL. My ISP ran some test and surprise, it seems to be my exchange. But I know my exchange is rubbish.

Enquired at Snowball also for wireless, but after sending the forms in a week ago, I have yet to hear back.

There are like 3 areas less than 1km form me, all showing fibre on Telkom's map, but nothing I can do. It seems theres only 1 real option for me. I need to sell my house...

I have exactly the same problem with a Telkom ADSL line.
Mine has been out for at least 6 weeks.

Dude. I disagree.

Mine is the most unstable copper connection between two points.

:D
