Well, It seems as though the dawn of the competitive market is here.

1. Today I was invited to see a live WImax demo and well I was blown away. This is going to be an awesome last mile access solution.

With Telkom dropping there cost of calls to the internet and ISP's becomming cheaper, it looks like the barrier to entry for the wireless broadband suppliers has just been raised a level. !!! And with Wimax etc local calls (anywhere in SA) are going to become dirt cheap, have even had quotes of 40c to cape town from JHB.

<font color="red"><font size="1">If you fill up a station wagon with data tapes and drive to capetown you could transfer 10000 GB in 11 hours, and it would cost you R 500 in petrol, Thats the kind of internet I wanna see !</font id="size1"></font id="red">

Wi-Max can also be used as a backhaul solution - it sports 45Mbps over 50 km when used with LOS point to point.

STAY AWAY
STAY FAR FAR AWAY

If it's ANYTHING like MyWireless, please kill yourself before considering WiMax... cause god knows the world needs 1 less idiot

Hell, my gran on a scooter with a memory stick is faster than Sentech's MyWireless!

PPL, it is noway the same as Sentech, it is the eveloution of the 4G network.

It is 802.16

To be honest if Sentech had been done it properly, there would have been a great success.

I apologise if my explanation was ambiguous, wimax (802.16) is by no means using IPWireless techology, its developed by intel, I said
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">wimax is a LAST MILE solution, equivalent of mywireless.<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
implying that it falls into the category of last mile (xdsl/ipwireless/iburst/PLC are other examples of these), not hotspot.

Next point, <blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"> it is noway the same as Sentech, it is the eveloution of the 4G network.

It is 802.16<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Is it 802.16, or 802.16e???
what was the demo like?? who was it by ?? will its providers give us cheap reliable broadband???

To be honest, IPWireless UMTS-TDD technology is better than 802.16 implementations, if anyones interested, see http://www.techdirt.com/news/wireless/article/4489, it is a release by an ISP discussing why they are sticking with IPWireless over 802.16, unti l802.16e is released, standardized, and working.

I'm not saying its a bad technology, but for what its worth, I think iBurst is probably a little better at the moment.

With regards to the 50km Los at 45Mbps,
heres a little info on wiMax
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">These (802.16) products are
delivering only around 12 Mbps of peak capacity per sector – and are only able to deliver this to a very small part of the
cell. They only achieve coverage that matches UMTS TDD by using very high gain antennas (17dBi) at the customer
premise<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Disclaimer, these figures are of 802.16, not the long awaited 802.16e, and they come from a comparison between UMTS-TDD and WiMax, written by UMTS-TDD alliance! The general idea to be taken, is that the values given in regards to speed/distance, are the absolute maximum, in OPTIMAL conditions, and only a portion of the smart cell is capable of delivering the throughput, so lets not be too hasty in jumping into new solutions.
Even though Sentech is capable of 3MBps, well be lucky if we see 0.1MBps
