Is there a way for a South African citizen to invest in Apple shares?

Take a look at Interactive Brokers. They offer a cash account and a margin account. Commissions are very reasonable. USD0.005 per share with a minimum of USD1. Apple currently trades at +- $125.50 (R1540) and has a price target of $160. 100 shares would therefore cost you $1 commission and a 1000 shares will be $5 commission (1000 x 0.005).

And you need minimum R120k to be able to use them...

Looks like you can with Standard Bank Webtrader.
You can try out a demo account for 20 days.
I'm going to try it out for fun.

You are correct, the minimum is fairly steep. There are online brokers with a lower opening balance but their commissions are usually very high.

Agreed. I am using Standard Bank webtrader and have two shares at R100k each. Per trade I'm paying $20 but I'm longterm and the fees have already been "paid" by the growth I've gotten. Webtrader has a minimum amount but massive. They do however have an admin fee linked to the amount invested, 0.020% of the value per year. All of these things need to be considered when starting out in Offshore investments...

Now might be a good time to pick up some Apple stock. The share price got slaughtered the last few days and with the strengthening USD and possible increase in US interest rates, the ZAR is on the back foot. Win-win, untill it isn't.
