Investment Banking career in South Africa

Would like to hear some opinions regarding investment banking as a career choice in South Africa. Plan to complete CA before starting to apply.
  1. Can you enter investment banking directly after qualifying as CA or should you gain experience elsewhere first (corporate banking etc)?
  2. Which SA bank options would be the best if your long term goal is to work overseas in the investment banking field (3 - 5 years after first job)?
  3. Is it important to do your CA articles at an audit firm or will a TOPP route (at a bank) be more beneficial for investment banking?
  4. Is it worth also doing CFA after CA if your goal is exclusively investment banking?
  5. If you cannot get employment at an investment bank after qualifying, what is a good stepping stone to work in while seeking IB employment?
  6. What other banking role would you rather pursue than investment banking and why?

Asking for someone.

Working as a quantitative research and/or developer at an investment bank is really good career wise. Generally speaking, successful hedge funds and more exclusive shops are a further step up.

Thanks for the reply. Would you mind sharing if the roles you suggest is attainable with an accounting degree? Are these roles not more maths intensive?

Generally not by itself. You would typically want to have a degree/major in stats/maths/computer-science, etc. This was to answer your “other role” question.
