Siri recorded conversations without permission in iOS 15

Apple's virtual assistant Siri recorded and stored users' conversations for reviewing by Apple even if they opted out of the feature, according to a report from ZDNet.

The issue was caused by a bug in iOS 15 which automatically turned on the Improve Siri & Dictation setting.

Well, my Xiaomi phone inexplicably uploaded over a GB of data one night with absolutely none of the apps reflecting the usage, so it's not like it's all sunshine and roses on the Android side either. Especially not with these Chinese devices.

The only reason I discovered it, is that I wasn't on WiFi that night, so it used mobile data. All of my settings, including WhatsApp backups were set to happen ove WiFi only.

Mail in your outbox.

They meant "bug" as in a bugging device that records private conversations.

Don't have any email set up on the phone. Even Gmail is disabled.

The phone showed the usage for the past 24 hours as 1.3GBs uploaded, and some small amount downloaded.

The thing is, in the app data usage breakdown, none of the apps even came close. So basically some invisible app sent off a large chunk of data from my phone.

Playing devil's advocate, it could have been event logs related to the MIUI overlay, but I always opt out of that stuff when setting up my devices.

These things don’t surprise me anymore.

I’m willing to bet all our smartphones are doing some sketchy nonsense in the background, including Siri in the latest iOS 15.4 Beta, no matter what Apple say. The day we lost the ability to physically remove the battery and shut it all down we lost control, lol!

It is however hilarious how this stuff is revealed down the line.
