- now phone is is in recovery mode (dont know why)
- have to restore the phone
- in iTunes 12 i have tried numerous occasions now to restore it
- the wretched program just freezes and does nada
nothing niks.....
Why is some OS upgrades perfect and this piece of crap ios 8.1 has caused so much crap?

If your iPhone stuck in recovery mode, DO THIS: (ON Screen USB pointing to a CD with a Music Note).

1. Make sure your iTunes is up to data, if not re-download itunes.
2. after re-installing ITUNES, plug your iphone via USB into your computer. ITUNES will automatically pick it up and a pop up box will probally say that your IPHONE is in recovery mode would you like to restore?
3. Click the restore tab.
Note - If ITUNES if out of date, this will not work.
Note - Do not do this over WIFI
Note - Do not interrupt the restore
Note - If you did not make a previous back up, your IPHONE will restore back to the factroy settings.

All this happened to me, fortunately I made a back up. I hope this helps.

else go to iStore.

Any technology named after a fruit should never be used.

Adam and Eve - Apple old tech just used cause people are familiar with it.
Android - Future robots ,C3P0 , R2D2 , Bender
Blackberry - the things in my muesli

but yes best bet istore , those geniuses can factory reset any iphone for you.

1.) Download the required IPSW and save it to your PC/Mac - Make sure you have the right version for your device.http://osxdaily.com/2014/09/17/ios-8-ipsw-download/
2.) Your phone needs to be in DFU mode to do a DFU mode restore. iTunes will always display the same "phone in recovery mode" message even when it is in DFU mode. The difference when the phone is in actual DFU mode is the screen is blank. I say again, the screen is blank. Nothing displayed. Looks like the phone could be switched off.
3.) It takes 20 seconds to get an iPhone properly into DFU mode.

Press power button for 3 seconds, continue to press power button and home button simultaneously for another 10 seconds, release power button but continue to hold home button for another 7 seconds... Phone should be in DFU mode.

4.) In iTunes shift/restore and point towards the saved IPSW...make sure you have an Internet connection for the verification process.

Go and make yourself a cup of coffee. When you return your phone will have been restored to 8.1

My wife's done the same, used tiny umbrella to get it out of recovery mode, turns out it didn't have enough free space to complete the upgrade

When you say it does not install, what exactly is it doing?

What error message does iTunes give you when you start the process?

Try Digicape for sure.

sounds like your internet connection might be the main problem.
