Maybe some food for thought:

You don't have to quit your day job to start a business. For many, the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to starting a part time business.
Starting-a-part-time-business
Entrepreneurs have good reason for working full time at a job and part time on their businesses, experts say. For some people, especially in economic times like these when they’re worried about their regular job, starting a part-time business gives them a safety net.

Part-time start-ups by full-time employees may also offer a source of extra income when future pay raises are likely to be infrequent or non-existent.

Running a business while still employed can also make good business sense. An entrepreneur with a full-time job to fall back on is under less pressure to make a venture succeed quickly.

It also gives you the opportunity to make a few mistakes and not have that mean the end of the business.

It is about a week since my original post so here is the promised feedback:

Firstly, thank you to everyone who responded.

By now you probably know that the Internet of Things brings with it massive economic value, not only for the beneficiaries of the specific IoT solutions or applications, but also for those involved in building and supporting these.

As almost every taxi driver will tell you, their business is only one example of the far reaching disruption that new (IoT enabled) business models will have on everyday life.

In the news TODAY in Gauteng: EWN: Metered taxi drivers say Uber drivers operate on lower prices and it’s killing their business.

The reality is that UBER has enabled thousands of people to use their skill, resources and time to generate an income. If you think about it UBER has democratised the taxi industry.

At the same time, they are offering cost effective, super-efficient transport that does away with a huge number of the limitations and frustrations of a traditional taxi.

We are exited to explore this new world with you and we look forward to the solutions that will be developed by the creative geniuses like you!

Those of you who responded to the questionnaire will be contacted directly in the next couple of days to explore the next steps.

The plan is to equip as many of you as we can with highly sought after skills and qualifications worth more than $3,600 each. (subject to your commitment and dedication, readiness, availability and aptitude etc.)

If you have missed this opportunity don't dispair: Keep an eye out, I may just have some freebies up my sleeve for about 20 people. Not promising anything yet.

Hint: Certain udemy certificates may be worth more than you think :)

Hi Duan,

Are applications closed? :crying:

I have had a few PMs asking the same.

We are pleased to have had a very good response to our questionnaire.

We want to try and accommodate as many people as we can and to that end we have decided to re-open the application for as long as possible.

To avoid any unnecessary delays, we will not stall the process, but accommodate late applications as best we can.

Until further notice, the application process is re-opened.

Not too keen on the NDA though. Some freelancers dabble in all sorts of things including IoT and I feel as if the freelancer will be restricted by the NDA

In what way is Uber an example of IoT?
I don't see the connection.

Uber connects the dots between a passenger looking for a ride and a driver willing to provide it.Thats the connection Uber has with IOT.Uber doesn't any car, nor driver.

Internet of Things:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
http://internetofthingsagenda.techtarget.com/definition/Internet-of-Things-IoT

The internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data.[
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_Things

IoT is simply the network of interconnected things/devices which are embedded with sensors, software, network connectivity and necessary electronics that enables them to collect and exchange data making them responsive.

Anyone who thinks Uber is an example of IoT (and I know, a lot of 'experts' will tell you it is) has a fundamental misunderstanding of what IoT actually is. In my opinion.

Uber is very clever use of the internet, it's not Internet of Things though

Any update on this?

Amazing response received.

We are still processing this and handling some administrative tasks.

If you have completed the questionnaire you will be included in the process.

I respect your point of view and I believe one could argue various points of view.

As your variety of definitions illustrates there is currently no single clear accepted definition of IoT and to complicate things further IoT and IoE is often used interchangeably.

I think people and business systems could also be considered "things" because they generate data and can perform actions. But I accept that you may differ in opinion. Personally I have no intention of trying to develop the definition of IoT, it could become a religious debate :)

Regardless your input generates constructive discussion. Thank you.

For those of you who caught onto the hint above:

I previously also mentioned that the following 3 Micro-courses on Udemy is available free to everyone.

You will most likely find hundreds of explanations of what the IoT is and it is likely to differ from person to person.

This opportunity revolves around our view of the IoT which is captured in the Udemy Micro-courses which I listed earlier in this thread.

If you are keen on freelancing, you can supply your information (as per the initial post in this thread) and we will be in contact with next steps.

If you don't know what freelancing is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freelancer

IOT is about internet connectivity where all devices/things no matter how small or unexpected will be connected to the internet. Think about a belt connected to the internet that measures your steps, waist size, etc. or your shoes or pen etc etc.
Its a new buzz word like the cloud used to be and a lot of people are trying to ride the buzz and associate anything and everything with it.
