I am trying to set my internet connection to use a static IP given to me by the WBS helpdesk. However I am informed that the static IP is already in use on this network. How do I find out what is using this IP?

firstly... you're honestly wasting your time with a static IP and remember if people spoof your IP (and on the iBurst network it happens alot) and it gets entered into a blacklist database or spam database.. you're pretty much screwed if you plan to connect to computers on the net..

I'm not sure you mean by 'what' is using it, you can try reverse DNS the IP with 'nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' in a command prompt to find the hostname but its probably going to look like a normal iBurst user hostname and you can try pasting the ip in your browser to see if they run an httpd and if so what they have on there or port scan will let you know alot about them... but thats not the sort of activity people appreciate

When it says this network, I thought it referred to my computer and not the general iBurst user base.

You might be right though Slim. A helpdesk guy gave me an IP address to use. That's the error that comes up when i enter it into Local Area Connection. I will give them a call when I get home to see what they make of it. Wish me luck.

A great gain I am sure:

* No more moving violations (taxi's) on the roads cutting me off
* No more affirmative action/reverse racism
* No more appaling internet bandwidth or paying a small fortune for poor bandwidth
* No more being ripped off by the banks and SA corporations
* No more sitting in traffic jams from hell because traffic lights are not working
* No more having to worry about the stupidity of some people in this country

Why wait for me to be president? The SAA strike is over so international flights are available. Again no great loss for me.

Nope, we have n00bs on the forum who think they know all about telecoms and SLA's and JD's for transmission techs when I know they never worked for Telkom, MTN or Vodacom

Seems someone is more a technocrat than understanding how business decisions can and are made. Didn't like that being shown up.

Look my friend... I know you were referring to me there....

Every link that doesn't work = loss of revenue

It's not exactly a complicated formula to figure out but, if you had worked for Telkom prior to 2001 you'd understand what I mean

Kei, in my eyes any chance of us having an intelligent debate was thrown out by your use of the “n00b knows nothing “ argument. That being the case, have yourself a good day.

to be honest the above is not true as it was clearly your 1st reply that put laid to any hope of intelligent debate

Are you serious that we all had to belong to one of those organisations? I guess then that this forum would be totally unnecessary, because the 10 of you that did belong to those organisations, would never succeed in getting anything changed. I believe that one of the benefits of these forums are so that newcomers could in fact be helped and educated. Lets face it, the days of computers for a few literate computer people are long past. I really believe that your comment is way out of line and that an apology would in fact be in order.

I have been reading these "postal exchanges" between Kei & Jongi since this morning, and quite frankly all they have achieved is the derailment of this thread, personally I think you should both get a room bcos there's definitely some sort of tension between you two, anyways the forum is not that room...:)

Kei is just expressing the love he dare not acknowledge :)
The unintended hijacking of this thread is unfortunate.
