I'm looking at finally replacing my iPad 1 Classic as our spare iPad.

I think the smaller size & portability will be rather handy.

I see the 1st gen iPad mini tends to go rather cheap 2nd hand; the much more superior iPad mini 2 is a fair deal more.

So as the iPad mini 1 is based on iPad 2 underpinnings I have just 2 Q's to those owners.

- How smooth does iOS 8; specifically iOS 8.3; run on the 1st gen iPad mini. Any hiccups & bugs?

- can you play 720p videos/movies fine with the VLC App?

I don't watch movies... It's fairly smooth. A few apps do just close if you're doing too much. Web browser doesn't keep all the tabs loaded and you'll have to reload them if a few are open

I've got Netflix and Youtube on mine, which I use frequently, no hassles as all, rather happy with the playback, yes it's HD. As for general performance, I've never really had any issues it, I don't play games on mine, but on the occasion I have, it ran flawlessly. Only slight issue I've had (as ahoudet mentioned) - Having too many browser tabs open can cause the browser to crash, I use Chrome, and it doesn't keep all the tabs loaded, it's as if the cache is cleared constantly, only the active tab will remain, well, active. The rest require you to click on the tab and wait for it to load. But it's hardly a biggie

Thanks for the feedback gents. The cache of sites could very well be due to the low 512mb ram. Just a matter to find a cheapie Gen 1 Mini now.

So keen to take out this TM deal. R199 x 24 months for the 16gb iPad Mini 2 WiFi + Cellular; 500mb a month data & that 1.5gb Night Surfer will be a bonus.

Works out go R4776; due to the crappy Rand the same iPad is R6299 cash. Deal is sterling value.

Anyone have any idea if you already have a Telkom Phone + ADSL account if you need to go thru the whole process for a Telkom Mobile contract?
