I am thinking about it. Been gung ho on getting an iPhone, but then I think to myself, most of the time I'd be using the iPhone in my wireless home environment, so what would the point be? May as well get something with a bigger screen for about the same money.

Besides the iPhone will just get messed up in my pocket and be subject to unwelcome close scrutiny by the savages that surround us.

Getting myself a proper netbook (for cheaper). I can't beleive they did not include a single usb port or sd card slot.

recently announced touch screen tablet PC
Its not a PC, its a oversized smartphone

According to Jobs the iPad will be “so much more intimate than a laptop, [is] so much more capable than a smartphone” and will offer “the best browsing experience you’ve ever had”.
bigger iphone with wifi but no flash support... nuff said

Uhhhh, Tom....'scuze me, but you have the dates screwed up. The date in early April will be when it will be available in the USA. Jobs told us the international versions of the iPad will be available one month AFTER the USA.

As for me.....I love apple products, I have 3 iPhones, iTouch, 2 iPods, 2 iMacs, and one macbook Pro.....but this one I will pass on - until they get up to speed with a few items. More memory, a USB slot, SD card slot, a front mounted camera (so it could actually be useful with skype), also a better operating system - I would like to see it with the full OSX leopard.

Normally I steer clear of Rev A of anything that comes out of Cupertino but I want one of these despite the risks. :)

I understand their marketing strategy, but it sucks if you are a consumer - Apple are fully capable of providing a unit with way more features......however, they are keeping their shareholders happy in the long run. What I mean is...people will rush out and buy an iPad, then in 6 to 12 months time they will add more "must have "features" like more memory and a camera.....then after a further 12 months they might add a USB port and an SD card port. So what in effect they are doing is providing an ongoing market for their product, and selling far more of them in the long run, because people will keep buying again every time they add features. This marketing approach is not unique to Apple, it happens with lots of other manufacturers. Like I said, it sucks, but they are in business to make money, and this is a strategy to keep them profitable....which in turn will allow them to produce more and more ground-breaking new products.

I still love Apple, and will get an iPad, but will wait a bit on this one.

Tpex, I didn,t say it was crap - it is a very good product that I WILL purchase, just not right now. I will wait until they add the features that they are fully capable of adding right now, but are not, due to marketing strategy.

I am also an Apple lover. iMac, Mini (for media centre), iPhone, Apple Wireless Network X5, lots of iPods

I share your views in the main and a lot of your wishes may come to pass.... except one.
OSX - Yes I also want it but I am not going to get it. If you do that then the iPad becomes a competitor of the MacBook and they will never allow that.
This device is for people that want that in-between device, surfing the web, reading books, checking email etc and most importantly using the iPad applications that will come to pass. Thed kind of device you take with you areound the house and on the road but strictly one where there is no hevy lifting to be done.

The front mounting camera is an exclusion I don't understand. Also the lack of a USB port

Everything else that people are complaining about don't understand what the device is for fro a business perspective.
Apple won't make a cheaper, lower margin device that will cannibalize their own products. It makes no business sense.

So they want you to have the iPod, iPhone, Ipad, MacBook and if you are really geeky (like me) an iMac as well.

I will hold out for the 2nd generation but I will cave in and get one

FFS, if you want USB ports and cameras and memory slots then get a freaking computer. It's not hard to understand. Really it isn't.

This is a gadget designed for media convenience, not for computing.

One would think in a "media convenience" roll.. it would have support for ...ummm....media :D

It must suck if you want to use this for photography... you cant just pop your sd card or flash disk in to get media onto the device.

Also.. its sunday. Chill :)

No multitasking really is sad, I guess thats not a requirement for the average user of an iPad, but it sure would be nice to be in a Skype call and be able to open an office document as well :)

It is quite possible to stream media to your iPad, including all your photos, music and movies, from a Mac server (any Mac will perform this function). In fact, if you want to, you can quite easily control your Mac and all the applications on it, including editing programs, etc, by loading your desktop via the same remote server. I can do this right now on my iPod Touch, but the screen is a little bit small.

As a professional photographer myself, I can see this perhaps working very well in a studio environment using remote tethering with something like onOne's Remote DSLR app. Granted you will still have to have your MacBook to connect the DSLR to, but with Live View for product work it will be pretty awesome.

You need to view the iPod as being a remote interface for your main computer and media servers, rather than being a stand alone computer. That is not what it is designed for. That's what laptops are for.

Mac server.. ouch.. thats like a French tank.

So Apple created a niche device only useful to people who have lots of mac items already... that doesnt support basic usb or sd cards. Its more useless than a phone. Saying that, if I had several spare million to blow, I would waste money on that :)

Sorry but it's not going to be a hardship to plug my camera in via the dock connector.

I stream all my digital content from mac and pc. Very little needed in terms of additional software.

Macs are for consumers who don't like to screw around with drivers and BSOD's.

I think the iPad may not be as popular as the iPhone, but it will definitely be more useful around the home. Take a look at some of the thousands of apps you can get for i-devices in the itunes store - they are amazing.

What this thing does is allow you to compute without being at your desk and without the frustrations of a small screen. You can use a netbook, but the ergonomics are not very good. I think I will be buying an entry level iPad, depending on how much Core decide to rip us for one.

or usb ports...
or multi tasking...
or flash video...
or. sd cards..

Personally I think Jobs lost the plot on the device. Beautiful in theory and possibility, extremely terrible in practicality.

I have to admit, your "no bsod" comment holds water, I mean, thats why I use my Sharp Calculator. Its also Bsod free :) It just doesnt do much.

I really hope future generations of Ipad are more practical... cause it has loads of potential.

You can already move images to your iphone via wifi, edit and tag, and then upload them to the destination of your choice. No computer required. Just think what else you'll be able to do with the iPad's hardware.

A quick read of the iPad spec page reveals ... iPad Camera Connection Kit providing both USB and SD card connectivity via the dock connector. There has always been background execution in iPhone OS - but only for certain apps in certain situations.

As for Macs - they do all the things you mention - although sometimes I wish that flash worked a whole lot better.

Im sure Macs do what they want them to do, lol. I own one so I should know :)

Are people really silly enough to use mac as a server? Does it offer some special benefit that better and free server OS`s dont offer? Or is it just for gullible people?
