iPhone 12 launch date for South Africa

The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, and iPhone 12 Pro are set to launch in South Africa on 18 December 2020, an industry source has told MyBroadband.

Speculation regarding the launch date has been fuelled by a post on Twitter from Cellucity, a mobile device cellular service reseller.

Cellucity better hope they dont get a slap in the face by Apple / Vodacom. There are normally memo's sent out with strict info and sales embargo's stipulated regarding giving out information or issuing stock before we are given the OK on launch date.

WIth Vodacom selling the iPhone 11 for over R600 0n a 36 months contract, expect this to be 48 months and financed through Wesbank
  Or maybe considering pricing locally you can buy the new iPhone from iStore on a 25 year loan from Absa Home Loans!

Core releases Black Friday : R8999 for an iPhone SE that costs R6971 WITH VAT if bought in the USA. Add R500 shipping and you're still way way below them lol.

Bunch of muppets.

They didn't with the latest M1 MacBooks and iPhone SE. They are decently priced.

iPhone prices could certainly be worse. If you do the maths on importing a $1,199 iPhone Max Pro, after insured shipping, duties, VAT and consignment, you're unlikely to be looking at less than R27k total cost. The local price is R30k.

Don't go giving them ideas!

Funny thing is that the US prices remained the same from the 11 and I might be talking under correction here but is the US dollar exchange rate not better at the moment compared to last year September?

I don't need to do the maths, I've brought in multiple items in the last 2 months;
Macbook Pro 13" : Came in R3500 cheaper than local with DHL, forwarder and insurance AND its a 16GB not 8GB unit.
Macbook Pro 16": Came in R4000 cheaper than local with DHL, forwarder and insurance.

I can't see why the phone won't be the same. Thats R7500 i saved on 2 units - and this was not buying from a distributor, its RETAIL prices against a ZAR/USD on top of it. Core Group are thieves, simple.

EDIT - Actually i worked it out with exact numbers, on the Macbook Pro 16" I've saved over R8k.

iPhone prices are in line with the cheapest Macs. The higher up you go, the higher Core's margins.

And I agree. This is a post of mine from a day or two ago elsewhere on this forum:

Core can burn in hell. Everything they touch becomes a steaming pile of overpriced s**t.

Aah gotcha!

Yeah - look sometimes some things i've seen do align. I think I once saw an iPhone price here that was only about R1k off USA which is not worth importing. I don't know what causes the fluctuations.

I just wish Apple would send a big suit here (please Tim!?) to slap around some people at Core so that Apple South Africa can be the awesomeness that is the Apple Family. Starting with dropping that fake warranty thats just an insurance plan.

Hi there.. if you don’t mind me asking how did you go about buying from overseas? I have paid the local prices but if I can buy thru Amazon or whatever you use it would be appreciated. Thanks

It’s not always about costs though, if you buy an item from a vendor that is not located in South Africa there is a good chance that the warranty of the item would not be upheld locally.

If you buy an item for an overseas vendor and need to send it back or pay for local repairs you may end up out of pocket compared to just buying the item at local prices.

I buy from Amazon or BH Photo Video. Then ship via Shipito or MyUS. I usually choose DHL - which is THE MOST expensive option but their stellar service and reliability is worth it for a R40k device.

As mentioned, warranty can be an issue. Although Apple has a global warranty that its resellers and repair center partners MUST adhere to, Core Group have been scaly and tried to get out of repairing devices they know were bought by a South African and brought in instead of purchased through them. Thankfully they're not the only repair center though. But take it as a precaution.

I don't mind the risks of repair, but you might. For me not supporting Core Group is worth it, I mean if buying it from Amazon and shipping here and a USD/ZAR exchange rate is so cheap, imagine what mark-up Core Group is putting on it since as a Premium Reseller they're prob getting stock way cheaper than Amazon is. I reckon they're sitting on a 60-100% markup easily... Plus that pitiful insurance product they try to palm off as an Apple Warranty.

EDIT - PS btw if buying as a company and claiming VAT, you might need to buy it locally, not sure how the VAT will work on an international purchase.
