iPhone 16 sales lacklustre in South Africa

Lol funny then that Makro pre orders haven't even shipped a month later. I call BS on the headline.
It also has just 128GB storage and a 60Hz display.

An entry-level price of R20,000 might be too bitter a pill to swallow for even the biggest Apple fans, considering 256GB and 120Hz have become the standard across other flagships and even some mid-range phones.
Yeah because they don't call it Lagdroid for nothing. You need 120Hz to make the lag pop.

Well, the issue is getting fcked over with the price.

The latest Samsing Galaxy is cheaper in SA than it is in US, yet the latest iPhone in SA is R15k more expensive here.

Someone is making a lot of money and shafting the SA consumer.

I love Apple, but I think SA consumers needs to be more vocal about being ripped off and MyBB needs to tell us who is ripping us off. Be investigative and a force for good.

Brilliant video on this topic.

I'm not one for the Apple ecosystem, but this article caught my eye, and I can tell anybody what the problem is. If you look at the exchange rate, and what they go for in the US, then the cheapest option should cost about R14 100. On the current exchange rate.

But... You know. "Fluctuating value of the Rand. Special purchase arrangements to cover our bases. And they have to make sure they don't make a loss on old stock. We have to wait another 6 months to 3 years before a stronger Rand starts affecting local prices" Yada-yada... The usual spiel. Wait... "old stock"?

Right... BS. We're just paying too goddamned much for tech in SA right now. The Rand has basically been on a stronger trajectory since early 2023. With ups and downs, sure, but the trend is clear. Somebody's taking a fat chance, trying to make fat profits. And, I've pretty much decided to not buy any tech that is not absolutely essential, until prices are adjusted appropriately again.

We pay EU prices. It's mostly the same price here and there. Blame Apple.

Problem is if everyone does that the demand is low so they just won't bring new tech in. It's basically like they either want to rip us off you we can suffer and not have it.

See this alot lately ,make a product **** or expensive then if it doesn't sell discontinue it and claim there's now demand for it.

Like bmw making you pay 40k extra for a manual in the previous Gen. Now there's no manual option

Its not Apple but Core Group (iStore)

For example: iPhone 16 (UAE) - R16 399 Local: R20 999
iPhone 16 Pro (UAE) - R 20 921 Local: R26 499
Not to mention as a tourist you can claim 5% VAT Back on the purchase

And generally the price of other tech is the same locally as the UAE so Core group being greedy once again.

On a fully maxed out model it becomes more ridiculous

iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB (UAE) - R32 614 Local: R42 500

Exactly. No-one pays US prices except the US. If it's 999 in USD, it's 999 in GBP, which is 1,300 USD. Prices vary world wide and generally speaking, on Apple gear we don't do half as bad as people think we do.

Stock, stock, stock! I am trying to get my wife and I the iPhone 16 and every time I look to order, the model I want is on back order with a 2-3 week delivery.

Most people with a 2-3year old iphone, probably dont see any value in replacing their phone for a new one.
Given the cost, naturally people dont want to pay more for basically a negligible real world difference.
And with 4 year contracts on the scene, with multiple year OS support, your device gets new features/enhancements anyway., so people will sit tight.

This is a reseller problem. Not a manufacturer problem. Apple is not much inconvenienced by low sales turning to no sales. Nor is BMW. Their profit margins are much tighter. They rely on bulk sales for real money. Our problem here in SA is that we don't have wonderful manufacturing. But, we have a big fat layer of resellers in the middle, who cherish per unit profits. Once people have convinced themselves that they NEED something or other. Then if they don't buy one thing, then they'll buy another. On top of a government that is not shy to maximize SARS revenue from imports, and then BEE. As primary purposes. Nothing to do with protecting local manufacturing when it comes to higher end goods.

haha if they had stock sales would be better -- i been waiting

"It appears as though early sales of Apple's latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 16, have been lacklustre in South Africa.

This comes despite a MyBroadband reader recently expressing frustration at stock being unavailable from the iStore, one of South Africa's best-known Apple retailers."

As I got expareratbed the other day and told a student of mine "you just answered your own F*uk|ng question! Same here
