iPhone 4S disappointment is a blow to tech journalism credibility (Column)

Just shows how damn good Apple is when it comes to keeping secrets. Not even the top dogs in the industry got anything. Eggs on the faces of guys like Jonathan Geller is priceless. Apple should train the CIA/NSA/etc staff. Also helps when the Chinese gov guarantees watertight security and swift and ruthless action when/where leaks appear.

I find it really difficult to understand how Apple can so secretly produce the hardware that they do, all without anyone ever seeing the final product before the official releases. There must be 'sworn to secrecy' clauses signed with all their hardware manufacturers, with severe penalties if there are leaks.

For all we know Apple did design & build the iPhone 5 for a dual launch with the 4S, but due due to engineering issues (internal field trials failed), its release was postponed.

there's allways an N9 if you need next generation device, if not just keep your old iphone4 they still do wonders to the newly introduced ''s''

N9 is next generation compared to? 3310?

BGR would say anything for peoples attention, hardly worth a read. I don't think the new Iphone is that bad, its just bad compared to what people were expecting... IOS5 has added a lot of new features to the IPhone though. Perhaps this is just a stall tactic to keep people appeased until Iphone 5 is released, perhaps the hardware for the Iphone 5 doesn't exist yet.. perhaps, perhaps, perhaps....

This is the most likely scenario to me as well. Even if the iPhone 5 with the edge-to-edge screen graces us in June next year it can't make WSJ and Bloomberg right.

Or more accurately: There were so many iPhone 5 rumours, *someone* has to be wrong.

BGR was spot on about BlackBerry, though.

You obviously heard this from another 'reliable' source. :erm::p

The only disappointment here is the drivel that spews forth from the author.

Because there is no physical change to the appearance of the device does not make it a bad product. There are over 200 internal changes....and the big improvement is the OS that will be released on the 12th.

The physical appearance of the iP4 is a huge success !!!!!! Why change a winning formulae ? All that was needed to be changed was camera, CPU speed, memory, and additional functions which have been adressed.

You dont seem to get what you just said, if most of the changes are Software based then a new phone it does not make as most of the "Updates" will be available to all.

Oh I forgot they had to disable Siri just to make the 4S seem better even when the app was available for the Older models and working perfectly fine.

Except when they leave it in bars right? ButI guess the 4s is so unremarkable, it would be assumed as just a normal 4 - even if it was leaked.

I actually would get the iPhone 4S, just for its 1080p functionality - bare in mind most consumer camcorders/handicams only films at 720p or 1080i - which is a huge different compared to 1080p.

So just the new camera is already a massive upgrade, along with the new software, memory and CPU.

Just because it wasn't designed as like 'Ciccarese Design' predicted, now it suddenly is an Epic Fail according to the press.
Lets just wait till the actual launch and see what people who actually have the phone say about it.

If you actually read the article you'd see that I argue that the announcement *wouldn't* have been that disappointing if it weren't for all the hype.

To my mind the iPhone 4S was actually the least exciting announcement Apple made yesterday.

  • iPhone 3GS will continue to be sold, free on US contracts: Big news
  • Price reductions on iPhone 4, will also still be sold: Big news
  • Cards and Family and Friends locating: Interesting, discussable news (Google Latitude vs Family and Friends?)
  • Siri: The next evolution of the user interface? Nokia head designer was recently talking about the UX "off the glass" - is this the start of that?

lol, did'nt mean to start a flame, though tell me whats new to Iphone ''s'' that other platform do not have, voice command has been in symbian for ages s60 5th edition device had that and now vlingo is just a revised edition and you wanna tell me about siri, come on boy are mentally handycap or you're just arrogant 3310 and N9. Nokia N9 have more to offer than the old I with new name ending "s"

I wont call that an Evolution... more like an inclusion. Siri was available as an App for almost a year now. Well till it was pulled at the exact time of the announcement.

At least the old iPhone 4 users(as well as other OS owners) can still get Vlingo that Siri was using for a backbone. Now redone to be the same as Siri.

I actually think it's the Jobless effect, Steve made you WANT an apple product and regardless of the hype machines.
Steve made products on display better than what was hyped about no matter the large or small changes.
