so ive been doing lots of research about this since im in an upgrade window and have never had an apple before.

ive heard the camera is delicious and since i have a baba that's perfect. now from what i gather the 5 is stretched longer but apps dont use the extra space and the new dimensions feels a bit odd in the hand, is a bit lighter but freaks people out because they feel its like a toy, same camera but with the picture during video recording addition.

i need a delicious camera to snap baby in all situations, even low light so this is important and i understand both perform this well. im a bit cautious about the whole itunes, etc. coming from the free-for-all that is android being locked down will get some getting used to.

so did u guys find the upgrade from the 4s was significant enough?

The iPhone5's camera is superior to the 4s's. It has some reports of a purple flare under certain conditions but it's also fairly preventable. In particular the low light capabilities of the 5 are far superior.

Apps need to be updated for the extra screen size. So it's true that a lot of them aren't iPhone5-ready yet. But like all new form factors, it will happen, just takes some time to filter through.

Can't really comment on the feel of the phone; it's a matter of preference. Get to a CellC shop and play with them side by side.

Actually quite a tough question.

The 5 is superior in every respect with the exception of build quality.

They both run the latest version of iOS so I don't see much of an advantage there for the 5.

Don't under estimate the value of the extra screen real estate. Apps are being updated to utilize it to its full potential.

Camera is only a marginal improvement on the 4s, if that, but a very competent camera nonetheless, 2nd only to the Lumia 920. Don't expect too much from low light environments though. Just about every smart phone camera falls short in that department, again, with the exception of the 920.

Don't fret the iTunes and locked down environment. That environment is true of every OS with the exception of android. Apple is no more restrictive than Symbian, WM or Blackberry's OS. Besides if you hate iTunes so much uninstall it. After activating your iDevice everything else can be done via iCloud. Hell, you could even get the device activated at an iStore and never have that "ghastly" iTunes anywhere near your pc!!

Personally I love iTunes. Yes, I love it. The animosity and fear users have towards it is irrational and totally blown out of proportion.

Is it a worthwhile upgrade from the 4s?

Only if you getting it through Cell C @ R399 per month including 200 anytime minutes, 200 smses and 500mb data.

You won't get a 4s at that price. It's an outstanding package.

Well... build quality is pretty debatable. In terms of the precision of its chassis and the level of thoughtfulness and engineering put into it, the iPhone5 is leagues ahead of 4/4s/pretty much anything else. It's also MORE durable than iPhone 4 in drop tests and other normal abuse types. It's just that the edges tend to be prone to scratching due to the mirror type finish. And... I guess there's some issues with bending over time as well.

I used to think the whole iTunes thing bogged me down, but there are pluses.

Firstly I feel better at having a single easy access backup of all my stuff.
We also use my wife's iphone 4s to take photos/videos of our son, nice having a phone that can take brilliant pictures and it does take some stunning pictures in the right conditions let me tell you.
Also nice having iTunes where I can back up all my pictures.

A nice program I use is Minus you can upload pictures of baby and share single link to other people so parents can view etc.
Think you get 5Gb free space.
Cant beat the IOS app store either.

I do agree with you there.

But the feel of the 5 is certainly leagues ahead of the 4/S. Wonderful device to behold and to hold.

iPhone5 for sure, but definitely go for the cell c deal. I got mine on the SA release day, i haven't noticed any purple flare and I mainly use it to take baby snaps which turn out very good... it will literally take photos as fast as you can tap the screen/button so you don't miss a thing. Every app I have fills the screen, google maps works perfectly and games run buttery smooth.

I upgraded from the normal 4 to the 5 and that was a no-brainer, especially since apple starts restricting the OS capabilities as the phones get older (ie no siri on the 4).

So if you're thinking of either the 4s or 5, definitely go for the latest - especially if you can get it for R399. you'll be happier in the long run. The extra length makes it far from odd to hold so don't worry about that. Oh, and it is lighter than the 4s but seriously, after 2 days you don't even notice. Slotted mine in a great griffin cover aswell and A for away.

Can't comment on the switch from android to itunes but I'm pretty confident that if you give a proper shot, you won't be disappointed.

You used to require itunes for an iPhone but since iOS 5 you don't even need a computer. Everything including activation can be done on the device. The only time iTunes is handy is to transfer music you already own on to the device.

never had an apple before.

In this case, go for the best iPhone, especially since it is your first. Rather buy some that is future-proofed. Sinc eyou want to take photos, get the 32GB if possible.

Most apps have been updated, in fact, it's rare that you find apps that don't take advantage of the extra space.

new dimensions feels a bit odd in the hand, is a bit lighter but freaks people out

new dimensions are maybe slightly odd at first, but it's fantastic. Incredibly light and thin, but easy to hold and use. iPhone 4S feels like a small brick after using iPhone 5.

Yes. Absolutely. And with the contract prices (especially on Cell C) been so good for the 5, you may as well do it.

You can do that all with Photo Stream sharing. No other Apps required.

Rather just get an Xperia T. You'll be much happier.

you folks are making it hard to resist the iphone 5. :p i was leaning towards the 4s to be honest. was worried about all the negative stuff i was reading about the iphone 5. will make my way to a shop to see if i can get my grubby paws on both. oh the waiting list is very long as well. that might well put me off completely.:(

Why would you really want the 4s over the 5? I can get why you'd want an Android phone rather but the 5 is so comprehensively better in every metric (despite the bemused ramblings of Bevonk) that it's a no brainer.

Yeah the only argument I've seen against the 5 is that it's possibly too close to the 4S to warrant an upgrade from a 4S... which is obviously not the case here.

Thing is, it isn't really that close to the 4S - at least, given that it's been only a year between them and technology can only move so fast. It's actually changed just about every single facet of the 4/4s, for the better. The screen technology is completely different. The chip is over 2x faster. It's thinner, bigger, has LTE, and the design was rethought from the ground up. In that sense, it's about as far from the 4s as the S3 is from the S2 - only the size difference on the S3 is so much more dramatically obvious. Apple's method is deliberately not to change the appearance of the thing for a good reason; it's a recognisable brand.

Ryan Block tweeted this after playing with the 5 after the launch "Great. Use the iPhone 5 for ten minutes and now my iPhone 4S feels tiny, fat, and ugly. And that’s how they get me every time."

Personally, I'm surprisingly impressed by the camera. Might as well give my P&S to the kids now.

If you have the money, invest in a digital SLR, ideally with a 55-200mm lens. You will take the best pictures ever. You will not regret it. And leave the iPhone for the ocassional picture when the DSLR is not close.

i was just using the camera specs since this is my overwhelming criteria
