I read that the latest Yosemite update was vital because the older versions had security flaws, so I updated my iMac Retina and MacBook Pro. It was a massive update, just over 2 GB each. I noticed that the new "Photos" app was included into the update and not available as an option.

I did the update to my iMac Retina last night. When I woke up this morning it appears that it had already imported everything from iPhoto across to "Photos" app. I had a look at the new Photos app, and was extremely disappointed - very basic app, and very disorganised. Looks like the iOS app.....this is a computer, I don't want a tablet app to control my large photo collection.

So I went looking to see if the iPhotos app was still on my iMac. It was still in the Applications folder, but now it is greyed out with a no entry sign on it. WTF !!!! If I click on it, it says "not compatible with this version of Yosemite" !!!!!!
I'm gutted....what is going on with Apple, forcing this stupid iPad, basic app on us ?

OK so I went to my MacBook Pro which had also been updated to the new OS, opened up the new Photo app. On this computer it asked me.....do I want to import iPhoto into Photo ? I quickly stopped this process, and I see on my MBP I still have a working iPhotos on it, although they have removed the icon from the dock, and put the stupid "Photos" icon there, and I cannot delete it. I went to my Applications folder and moved my iPhoto icon back to the dock.

The problem is with my iMac retina - can I go back to iPhoto after it has automatically imported everything over to photos ? it won't allow me to use iPhoto (no entry sign on its icon). Is the only way to go backwards with time machine ?

Nope not possible. Secondly just give it time - the Photos app is much better than that rubbish they called iPhotos.

Agreed - Photos is a glorified iOS app. You need to update iPhoto to 9.6.1 - it should be available under Purchases in the app store.

I'm very disappointed in the direction Apple is moving - particularly with the demise of their Pro app Aperture.

Nope. Apple has removed it and Aperture.

If you've purchased either in the past they are still available under the Purchases tab - they're just not available for new users.

Oh yeah that's probably true. I stand corrected...

Ok - there is a bit of a trick involved - the OP will need to drag his existing iPhoto app into the trash and then install it from the App Store - just clicking on Update there does not seem to work.

EDIT: reinstall of iPhoto complete - working 100%.

Be prepared for a 1.07gb download

If you search the apple support community you should find a method of restoring the photos if necessary.

That way lies madness. Photos is the new direction of Apple so it would be much better to get onboard and adapt now rather than hanging on to iPhoto. Otherwise the transition is bound to be more painful when it becomes necessary.

Rene Ritchie's guide to Photos may help people transition:

http://www.imore.com/how-use-photos-os-x-ultimate-guide

Otherwise, there is always Lightroom.

Yes, I started downloading, saw the size and paused it. I will continue the download after midnight tonight with my night owl data :D

One point you're missing is that in the period between now and when replacing iPhoto truly becomes a requirement is that by then Photos might actually be a usable app.

For me I'll be using that time to find a replacement for Aperture. Lightroom isn't it.

How is it unusable right now? Granted you are far more into photography than me but the biggest adjustment I had to make was showing the Sidebar in Photos.

I'm not a big iPhoto user so can't really fairly comment on the cons when it comes to that app but compared to Aperture it's missing a lot of stuff that is essential for me. Biggest of all is the way it handles metadata. I need to be able to import my photos with a lot of data already in place including copyright info, contact info, keywords, description, date, time, location…

I also need to be able to do more precise editing and be able to reproduce those same edits, in full or in part, across multiple photos.

Except they never made anything called iPhotos.

And it was/is spectacular. More so now that I am stuck on Windows and there is NOTHING like it.

Fair enough, I thought you were comparing it to iPhoto.

Photos is in the same state the Final Cut Pro X was when it was first released: minimum baseline with new features to come as they are ready. Given than Apple has axed Aperture I imagine those pro features will eventually find their way into Photos.

There were still two very different apps available though - Movies for the amateur and FinalCut for the Pros - so while they did dumb down FC a bit it was still geared towards them. Photos is geared towards iOS users and, lets be honest, towards selling iCloud space.

If your intenetion is to remove the Photos app from the dock just right-click on the icon and under options click on Remove from Dock.

I may be wrong but aren't the editing controls better now in Photos vs iPhoto? It may not be as good as Aperture yet but it will get there.

I have found the editing tools in Photos to be very basic, and almost identical to their iOS app. I really don't like their "less is more" approach to everything they have been producing. Some areas have seen improvements, but there have been a lot of features taken away.

I did a brief google, and found a big issue is the ability to hide pictures in the new Photos app. Apparently hidden pictures are moved to a new album for all to see. I haven't used this, but for someone that doesn't want their kids looking at pictures not appropriate, it would be a major issue.

I know at the moment it is optional, but this drive towards the use of iCloud is also annoying. I have 30 GB of pictures, and I have 6 Mac computers in my house. God forbid I or someone mistakenly activates iCloud picture sharing.....can you imagine the amount of data that would be used to upload and then download to all my computers.
A far more sensible approach is just to back up pictures using regular time machine backups, and if syncing of pictures is needed...then simply do it when all computers are on the same WiFi network, wirelessly and free. Yes...as I started this paragraph off, it is optional...but where are they going with every iteration ? seems they want all our computers and tablets/phones to resort to the lowest denominator, and all to be like tablets and phones.
