'We are ready to host IPL' - CSA

Ajay S Shankar

March 22, 2009

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has said it is ready to host the second season of the IPL in April-May after the BCCI officially approached it with a request on Sunday morning.

"South Africa were officially approached today by the IPL officials, asking us whether we can host the event," Gerald Majola, CSA's chief executive, told Cricinfo. "We are looking at their requirements to see whether we can fulfill them. As I understand, we are one of the parties that they have approached, but for now we can say that we are ready to host the IPL. However, we expect to meet the Indian officials soon to understand the situation better."

Majola said that he expected to have "positive discussions" with the Indian board in this regard. "It is a huge compliment to CSA's organisational skills, facilities and infrastructure that we are being asked to host another major international event," he stated in a press release issued later.

An ECB spokesman told Cricinfo that the board was aware of the situation, and that it would be making a statement in due course. David Collier, the chief executive, is currently in Guyana ahead of the second ODI against West Indies.

Diverging views emerged from officials of the franchise owners as the news of the impending relocation broke.

Some franchises favour South Africa as it is cheaper option compared to England, the other serious alternative. "If we are looking at an April start, the climate in England would be a factor," a franchise official said. "Even the TV timings, we feel, will work better for us if the matches are held in South Africa."

Meanwhile PTI quoted another franchise official callind England the most logical venue because of the timings of the matches. "There's a big chunk of Indian expatriates there to take care of the franchisees' revenue factor," he said. England is also to host the ICC World Twenty20 Cup in June.

Senior officials from India and South Africa had earlier denied reports that the IPL was being relocated to South Africa. The tournament's future came under a cloud after the Indian government expressed its reluctance to approve the dates, given its clash with the country's general elections.

South Africa is also expected to host the Champions Trophy from September 24-October 5 this year after the ICC board endorsed a recommendation by its Chief Executives' Committee (CEC) to hold the tournament there.

We have the Champions Trophy this year. And we may just get the IPL for the same reasons.

I believe he is complaining about the champions trophy being in Joburg and Centurion, no games for the rest of the country.

IPL would be spread through the country because of 8 teams needing home grounds.

Well if he's going to moan, at least he should be specific! :p

This is awesome news for South African cricket fans and local cricket. Hosting both the Champions Trophy and the IPL goes to show the level of confidence the rest of the world has in SA as a host for large sporting events. Lets hope the football World Cup is able to prove to be as successful...

I'll be more specific next time ;)

I assume each IPL team would adopt a ground as its home venue

Not sure what the 8th venue will be though
Wanderers
Centurion
Kingsmead
Newlands
St Georges
Buffalo Park
Springbok Park
and then Kimberley / Potch /Paarl ?

Potch will definitely get a team. They have some of the best facilities in SA and the pitch is a cracking one for odi/20/20 games. Not sure if Buffalo park and St.George's will get teams , they might give Kimberley a team instead of buffalo park.

rumours from a good source that SA has got it...hopefully that's true.

only problem is I dont think we can fill our stadiums which will make it less glamorous..

good for our economy though.

local pro20 games get fairly large crowds, knock-out games are sold out, so are international 20 over games and if memory serves i didnt see empty seats at the 20 over world cup. so tickets sales wont be a problem.

also think they should do the "school kids get in fo free" thing, seems to be a South African cricket tradition now

The importance for the IPL organizers is the tv rights money, that's what they are moving it abroad to insure it gets played. They make their money from tv rights.

Also with each team having a big name SA International I am sure we will get good crowds.

Hope we get this :D

The BCCI at a press conference confirmed its going abroad and England and SA in press release confirmed they have been approached to be considered as venues.

It seems the english are favorites:http://content.cricinfo.com/ipl2009/content/current/story/396392.html

But have major issues:http://content.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/current/story/396363.html

For once the english weather is helpfull.

South Africa emerges IPL frontrunner

Ajay S Shankar

March 23, 2009

In a swift turnaround, South Africa has overtaken England as the preferred venue to host the IPL next month. Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, is flying to South Africa tonight to meet with senior officials of the South African government and an announcement is expected on Wednesday.

Weather turned out to be the principal factor that swayed the BCCI officials, a bulk of whom had been in favour of England till this morning when the realisation occurred that rain could seriously affect "as many as 70% of the matches" in the Twenty20 tournament which runs from April 10 to May 24.

Besides, the BCCI has been wooed actively by top officials in the South African government and Cricket South Africa (CSA), who have all promised to lay out the red carpet for the tournament, well placed sources told Cricinfo.

"The weather in South Africa seems to have become the deciding factor," the sources said. "Besides, South Africa is working out to be a much cheaper option. The South African government's interest in hosting the event is a major factor, too."

South Africa is also considered a better option when it comes to TV timings when compared to England. For instance, the IPL wants to start its first match of the day at 4 pm IST, which would mean a 11.30 am start in England. In South Africa it would be a 12.30 pm start.

That apart, Modi and Gerald Majola, the CSA chief executive, are known to enjoy a good personal relationship, especially after the two boards became founding partners of the Twenty20 Champions League last year. "This gives both the boards a lot of room for negotiations, adjustments and quick decisions, something that may not be possible with the ECB, which has to go by its board for almost every decision," the sources said.

It is believed that such a rapport would prove crucial in organising a tournament of this magnitude at such short notice.

Last night, England had emerged as the preferred venue to host the tournament after a powerful lobby within the BCCI and the Indian team management felt that such a move would help in preparing for the World Twenty20 in June.

However, that decision was almost entirely dependent on the ECB overcoming considerable obstacles related to costs and logistics and the approval of its stakeholders, including the counties, many of whom fear that their domestic schedule will be affected by the IPL.
