Hiya

Dunno what Im doing wrong. My 2GB iPod Shuffle (the new very small one) doesn't seem to have much of a battery life. It lasted 15mins this AM before shutting off.

I connect it to my pc to charge, but how long does it need to recharge the battery fully? The manual is sooo slimmed down...it hardly tells you anything. Also, does iTunes have to be open to charge it, or can I just leave it plugged in to my USB port without iTunes open?

I have the feeling iTunes needs to be running to charge it. Reason being, I left it plugged in over night to charge. Woke up, thought all fine (was blinking orange...so was like huh, whats going on?). I opened up iTunes...it saw my iPod and then the icon by my iPod in iTunes changed to a charging symbol. So it seems like iTunes needs to be open to charge it?

Sorry to sound like a noob...but the manual that came with it really is kuk

No you don't need anything open to charge AFAIK. It sounds like your battery is no good - it should last hours. Maybe take it in.

Yeah...searched Google, and cant seem to find anyone with same issue. Have posted on the Apple forum, might just take it in to Apple in Sandton for them to check out. Thanks.

I came across a post on a forum...states that it blinks orange when disk usage is enabled. But if I try unselect that option, it wants to sync and erase my music. So will have to do this at home. Oh well...iTunes = crap software. Still doesnt explain why I cant use it for longer than 15mins before the battery dies. Either its not charging because "Enable disk usage" is selected, or its a faulty battery. Which one it is seems to remain a mystery right now...

Might seem stupid, but have to ask...
Plugged into pc I assume?
Does your pc hibernate or sleep after a period of inactivity?
My iPhone does not charge when my iMac goes into sleep mode. Might be different with Windows though.

Cheers

The battery is definitely at fault. It should charge up in an hour or two and last very long. Take it in.

Hiya!

Ok, found the issue. Its not the battery. When it started wonking out again during my run today (I installed the voice option this time), I turned it off/on and the voice prompt said battery full. Then I decided to search the Apple Discussion Forum, and found the below links:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2066472&start=0&tstart=0

http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/09/04/02/ipod.shuffle.3g.problems/

Despite the player only being a few weeks old, problems are already being reported with the third-generation iPod shuffle, specifically in relation to contact with moisture. According to support discussions, play and volume controls may malfunction when used during activities associated with sweat, such as a run or a workout. Volume may suddenly ramp up to the loudest setting, or down to the quietest; play controls can become unusable, and some iPods may shut off completely.

In some cases users have stated that after leaving a Shuffle alone for an extended period of time, controls return; the next time the device is taken out for exercise however, glitches may resume. The problem is further believed to be persistent across Shuffles, as even replacement units have broken down. A temporary fix is suggested in the form of using other headphones with volume controls, and preventing cords from coming in contact with skin.

At present, no information has been released by Apple in regards to the cause of the malfunctions, or any plans for recalls or refunds.

The headphones control malfunctions causing these symptoms. Whats described above is exactly what happens. So the 3rd Gen Apple iPod Shuffle has problems, and Apple have decided not to do anything.

My advice...if you gonna buy an iPod Shuffle for exercise...STAY AWAY from it!

Good luck. They should replace it for you IMO. I vastly prefer the 2nd gen shuffle anyway. You can use any earphones you like.
