Ipod Touch Backup and Restore

Does anyone know if there is a specific software to backup and restore and Ipod.
I have tried the basic restore on Itunes but my problem persists
I would like to do a deep format of my Ipod.it hangs at times when syncing and i think the hardrive is damaged?
Does anyone know of tools that can scan the consistency of the Ipod or test the hard drive out. It can take up to 30 seconds to a minute to sync one song at a time. This is on any machine...its definetely the Ipod

iTunes is the only way I know to do it - why don't you back it up then do a full restore and set it up as a new ipod. If it works better you know you had a corrupt file somewhere on its profile, if not, then you know your ipod if faulty. You can always restore it back to the back up you made
