Iran, in a dramatic reversal, admitted that it had accidentally shot down a Ukainian jetliner mistaking it for a hostile target.

A statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces said its military was on high alert and “apologizes for the human error.” It promised that the “culprits” would be identified and referred to judicial authorities.

The three-year-old Boeing 737-800 crashed Wednesday shortly after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 aboard. As recently as Friday, Iran denied that it had fired a missile at the plane and accused western governments of “psychological warfare.”

The admission on Saturday came as a growing number of western nations, citing unspecified intelligence, said that Iran has shot the jet down.

How do you mistake an aircraft that just took off at one of your airports for a hostile jet? Idiots. They're lying.

They werent the only country that did that. That area is so tense. In 1988 the US shot down an iranian airliner from one of their warships mistaking it for a fighter plane. Everyone on board died.

It takes a lot of courage admitting you did it as a human error. This after the Americans attacked them last time. For the soldier at a military base they may have mistaken as a bomber.

We just have to look at our own military mishaps. We lost family onboard a SAA flight where the government was trying to smuggle explosives, causing everyone to die. Then you have to read up on our navy mishaps where the navy thought a tugboat was perfect for gunnery practise. Luckily the tugboat crew wasnt killed but they no longer assist the navy. The other time they practised firing from land and blew a hole in the back of the drakensberg ship.

Yip sadly military mishaps are frequent. Here even when safe. But there its really tense as they are at war.

If it was not for the leaked video of the missile they would have denied it so theres nothing courageous about it, they simply had no choice.

What a week for Iran.

Their military dude gets assassinated. They promise world-ending retaliation but their missile response has zero casualties. Hardliners in the country are unimpressed. Instead, over 50 people die at above dude's funeral stampede and then Iran shoots down an airliner filled mostly with Iranians. Also, sanctions increase and they can't make another squeak about America's actions.

Iran Flight 655. Oh the US warship was also in Iran waters when it fired. All 290 died.

Sadly it happens often. Less lately though. The US got it wrong more than most.

"Vincennes had made ten attempts to contact the aircraft on both military and civilian radio frequencies, but had received no response"

These latest dimwits shot down the plane just after take off, literally 10km from the airport.

So much for all the conspiracy theories in the other thread.

Most times the simplest explanation is the correct one.

This sucks for all concerned.

It is time for Iran to sort out its country.

Radical religious extremism is ruining a country that once thrived.

So X people got killed at Soleimani's funeral in a stampede and a bunch of Iranian citizens got killed in an accidental missile strike. Crikey. Iranians had better hope they don't declare war.
