I think he honestly believed he could "spread democracy" etc etc, not so much Christianity but Western ideals, but what his motivations were and what some of his advisors/rest of the administrations motivations were may be very different. Think the prospect of a permanent military outpost in the Middle East after they got kicked out of Saudi Arabia was probably pretty appealing too. Some people say Iraq did actually have WMDs but shipped them out the country to the Syrians who buried them in the Bekaa valley, who really knows what the truth is.
