Is 200/200 fibre overkill?

I use a 1gbs line... and it's not because I want some super speed, it's the price

Going from a 200mb line to a 1gbps line is like an extra R200pm or something even less. These companies are sneaky and as such that's what they offer, it's never a normal sliding scale otherwise I would happily pay 50% less for a 500mb line, but a 500mb line is like R75pm less, so it's a no brainer.

So in essence it all comes down to price.

I also think this fast speed line is BS.
We have a 200/100 line with 4 in the house. I have done multiple speed tests while all 4 was streaming and/or playing games and never was the speed under 180mbs
I mean how much does streaming use 4mbs? So a 50/25 line should be more than enough for most families,
Think I'm going to downgrade.

This....my 100/50 line is currently R797pm where if I opt in on the promo upgrade for a year of 200/200 it would cost R827pm.

for R33 per month extra, I'd do it. You can always see after a few months what it's like and if you don't like it then go back down to R797.

Do a speedtest.co.za or .net and screenshot those results, then after your new line do it again to make sure you are actually getting what you ordered.

R33.... peanuts

I've only recently started using proper gateways at both work (UDM Pro) and home (Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra), which allows me to track WAN utilisation. This info has shifted how I think about the need for faster fibre connections.

Bottom line, our family of 4, with all our devices streaming video (up to 4k), only utilise a small fraction of my 50/50Mbps fibre connection, according to my gateway.

Higher speeds only really benefits you momentarily. You'd really need to download or upload data ALL THE TIME to push up your average utilisation.

At work, about 80 devices share a 150/150 Mbps business fibre connection. Peak utilisation, according to the UDM Pro, is 3% / 14%.

My guess is that most people with 500Mbps or 1 Gbps connections at home would not notice it at all if their connection speed was decreased by 90%. Not all people, of course. Most.

Did the upgrade and it works fine for me. Well worth the extra R30

100%
I have graphing enabled on my Mikrotik and we often have 4 (or 5) devices streaming youtube and dont come near the 100mbps connection we have, maybe the occasional spike but it always averages out < 25mbps.

good stuff, remember if you're not happy with it you can always go back down to your previous speed at a later date, there shouldn't be any penalty. But then again R30 = 1 beer

Upgraded to 500/250. Should be active within 72 hours. I could not get a gigabit connection in my area. Then I upgraded the router to support the fiber and Wi-Fi 6e.

Which FNO is this? I"m with AH on Openserve also 100/50.

How much is the 200/200 if you sign for 12months?

CoolIdeas pushed us up from 100/100 to 300/200 a couple years ago. I haven't noticed a difference. Yes if you download a HUGE update it goes faster, but that's like a 10min shorter wait and that's pretty rare. You're not usually waiting for the update to complete.

I've had 200/200 for several years. I know its not probably necessary but I like how web pages load immediately

Using Cool Ideas for 3 years. No outages at all. Its Vumatel fibre

I got this promotion offer too, it seemed like a no-brainer for R30 extra p/m

It's not overkill if you play Call of Duty with its 40gb updates every 2 weeks 😂
