Is 3gb enough?

Many people say that 3gb is enough for most users and there is no way that you can use more than 3gb browsing normally. I totally disagree with that and think it's absolute bs!

Just to give you an idea. I woke up at eight this morning and started browsing and reading forums, a totally normal day. So far my stats for the day's browsing before lunch:

INT:
63 430 Kb's down
16 168 Kb's up

LOCAL:
15 490 Kb's down
3 142 Kb's up

Now if I stop browsing now and only browse up to 12pm every day, my months stats would come to 2387,94Mb's Int and 558,96 local for a typical 30 day month.

So I could probably make it for a month with 3gb if I was the only user using the line, I browsed for less than half the day and I don't look at images or other video clips etc. The above stats was me just browsing and reading international forums without loading any large images or other interactive sites like flash sites or video sites.

So I reckon I could probably use up more than 5-6 gigs just for my browsing habits per month. What do you use for a typical day only browsing?

I have 1 3gig account and it works for me. I constantly look up information, download big emails, download software (OpenSource/Freeware :) ), Visit YouTube regularly and share the line with two other people and I never hit 3gigs. It all depends on what you are using the line for!

If 3gb was really enough as telkom claims then why dont the ISPs just double the amount and leave the price point where it is?

The thing is that I browse for long periods of time and do quite a bit of research regarding my company. This means reading a lot of forums etc. Just by doing this for less than 3 hours a day I could almost finish a 3gb cap on my own. But still some people say it's enough for everyone when in fact most avid users could probably use it up easily.

Chances are that you have a Telkom account and never have usage issues any way :(

It obviously depends on the user, but for me personally it's not even close to enough. I don't have endless supplies of money to spend on internet each month because I am a so called "abuser" for reading a lot.

DAMN 3GB!!! Damn it to hell!!

I wonder where Telkom got there magic 3GB number from...from people like you that only use 3GB or less.

Tell me, if you could, would you use and download more if you didn't have that 3GB limit?

I'm on 512K uncapped/unshaped and I'm hitting the 70GB mark after 2 weeks. :p 3GB per month my a$$

But I agree with everyone. All depends on what you use it for. Me...I'm downloading the internet onto my PC :D

Ok what about this. Say I go on Skype for an hour a day to talk to friends...

~7kb/s * 60 seconds * 60 minutes / 1024. My maths sucks but that's about 24.5MB an hour. So if I did that for a month, it would use about 740MB.

Secondly, something which I do a lot is view peoples webcams (no, not pr0n). Holy ****tt does that use a lot. 25kb/s down and 5kb/s up. That's 30kb/s. For an hour it works up to 105MB an hour! Which is 3.1GB for a month.

These aren't "privileges", its WHAT PEOPLE DO ON THE INTERNET OVERSEAS!

I average 400mb a month... sad isn't it :(

I do browse many internet sites and YouTube but I avoid online radio and I don't play games online anymore....

Personally 70GB is because you are using P2P somewhere, I doubt it's for work and I would hesitate a guess that most of it is illegal.

I could be wrong but I doubt it.

10Gb a month would be fantastic for me and I think 99.5% of people.

Im intrigued at Telkoms billing and stats. Have they been independently audited? If they get ddos'd do they chartge customers for all the rubbish traffic they get? What if someone out there wants to flood ping my IP, do I get charged for the benifit of receiving their traffic? I maintain that if one s paying for traffic per byte it should be brand new fresh IP packets direct from the site, not telkom Proxied second hand ones...

Telkom Internet? If so, do you ever check your usage?

The size of the GIG all depends on a person's needs...If youre a straight BROWSER guy, 3 Gigs is enough...If youre a DOWNLOAD guy ( ie programs, movies, music...etc ), sorry....then you need more gigs :)

The problem is who decides what type of user we are supposed to be?
Why must everyone be forced into the same little, bandwidth usage box?

I'm a BROWSER guy and 3GiB isn't enough!
I easily use more than 100MB per day visiting Flash intensive websites. Some websites eat up 5MB just loading the front page (video).

Define browsing? Does watching YouTube videos include browsing? What about flash sites etc. Aside from that it'd be quite easy for a few people combined to clock up 3 gigs in a month on normal browsing, broadband connections are supposed to be shared anyway. Point is broadband by definition, and everywhere else in the world, allows you to download and view whatever you want. What Telkom is offering is something closer to always-on dialup.
