I'm sure there must be other dial-up numbers besides *99# that can be used when connecting to the internet via one's gprs/edge/3G/hsdpa connection.

Can any of the grandmaster's please give me more info regarding this?

*99# will dial your default settings, otherwise you can use the *99***1# format to dial specific settings stored on the phone, replacing 1 with the number of the settings as they appear in the phone.

That's then a circuit switched call and you'll pay per minute and get a whopping 9.6kb/s. :D Unless you've got HSCSD. Still not a good option though.

not sure what os you are using but you can set a initialization string for the modem e.g at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet",,0,0 and then on the normal dun just dial *99***1# and it will connect to the given apn

They are stored in the phone or the data card's memory.

You can have multiple profiles configured, each with a different APN, the X is the number of the profile you wish to use, e.g. *99***4# connects using the 4th stored profile on your phone or data card.

... and *99# is not an actual phone number that is getting dialled by the phone, it's just an instruction to tell it to make a data connection to the cell mast (as opposed to a voice connection).
Just thought I'd point that out.

*99***1# vs *99# dialing strings for GSM device

Hello,

Can someone please tell me the difference in using *99***1# vs *99# for a GSM device's dialing string?

We're currently using *99***1#. Is there any advantage in using *99#?

The device in question uses GSM GPRS to communicate with the internet.

Thanks

No difference, really *99***1# only tells the server which internet profile to use, either one works.

If I remember right the consecutive ***'s give a time delay (at least one is required between the options, more for more time... so *99*1# may work faster).
So it dials the service (*99 is internet dial-up phone number when using a cellphone as a modem... before tethering was made easy), then it waits (I would think maybe 1* = 1second?) and then it sends the 1, and lastly # is like the enter key (or the end of the command).

But I used this in a Nokia N73 last, so I may have a couple of facts skewed.

It was a dialer options for dialing analog modem lines or GSM CSD connection. :)

Stars represent defaults values for additional parameters for creating PDP context. As the last parameter is '1' (which is default profile anyway), there is no difference.
