I have recently started as an independent contractor in IT and needed to buy a laptop for work purposes, my previous laptop was from my ex-permanent employment.

Now that I'm an independant contractor, my work requires that I have a laptop, so that is why I bought one.
This was a used computer that I bought for about 6k.

Is this something that can be claimed as deductable expense when doing next years tax return?
Just need to know as I do not have an invoice or anything...

The wear and tear on the computer is a deductible expense, think you can claim 33.3% on a laptop.

But you will need an invoice in the event of queries from SARS.

If the asset is under a certain amount IIRC it's 7000 you can write it off in the first year thereby being fully deductible in the first year.

You can claim it if its for work purposes.

You need some sort of proof if SARS asks for it when you claim it. Even if the seller just signs that he sold you this PC for x amount.

Google VAT264 and download that form. Its actually for claiming VAT on second hand goods, but i use it for all second hand goods purchases. Even though I'm not using it for VAT purposes. If SARS ever requires proof, this would be an acceptable proof in my opinion. I suppose it will will also serve good for VAT purposes if you later do register for VAT. The seller has to sign it and fill in the description of the goods, he also has to give you a copy of his ID.
