This is an interesting situation – MTN NS lodging a complaint with ICASA about Internet Solutions’s WiMax Network. MTN NS must be unhappy about something, but also not good to see WiMax networks going down. The more the better as long as they don’t misuse their spectrum.

So many companies hoping for WiMax spectrum…I hope the guys that do get it make the most of it!

Well we need to have competition in this else its pretty much gonna be another Telkom show. Already they have adopted a ADSL like model with rental etc :O

Only Telkom have the line rental atm, they have to have it to fit WiMax in with their other products, in the same way I'm sure Vodacom and possibly the others might make it a one price service.

Anyway, nothing amazing it going to come from this, international bandwidth stays the same, bad prices guarenteed.

Boycott MTN

Only in SA! When a company is trying to implement new and competitive technologies, the implementation gets shut down. ICASA should advocate technology investment instead of stifling it.

The 'online' future looks bleak for us folks. Sorry to say, but it's always a case of one step forward and two steps back (sorry for the cliche but enqough is enough already), and in the fast moving world of connectivity we ain't gonna catch up.

It seems the SA marketplace just doesn't like competition. It's us, the consumers, who bear the brunt.

Oh, and Telkom still sucks btw!

MTN NS lodging a complaint with ICASA. Anyone wondering exactly on what grounds the complaint was made and more importantly - what evidence was produced in substantiating the complaint and even more critically is how MTN NS came across this 'evidence' in the first place?

As a concerned consumer I must say this move by MTN NS shows them in a bad light in my eyes. If you're concerned about competition - improve your product / service / price and let the market see your offering is the better choice. Don't go running to the regulator crying foul without disclosing valid reasons why. It simply looks childish.

This whole situation seems fishy to me and I'm not even an IS subcriber

Reminds me of the proverbial school boy bully who gets a snot clap of his own and then runs to mommy with a snotty nose and crappy nappy!!!

Who the h*ll does MTN NS think they are. First they buy an ISP to help manage it's own network...cos they can't do it themselves (ahem enSync) Then they stiffle a competitor in this manner.

MTN, grow a backbone (excuse the pun) build a network of your own and get on with business...

I believe the allegation is that IS are using their "test" license for some form of commerical gain. If proven so, its firstly contrary to the license conditions, and secondly it is unfair to the other test license holders abiding by the rules.

I can understand people's frustration with glacial speed at which ICASA's spectrum allocation process is proceeding, however I dont believe this justifies breaking the rules. Heck with that mindset we can all just do away with licensing altogether and everyone can use whatever spectrum they want, however they want, leaving our airwaves an unusable mess.

agreed - it seems that it definitely relates to commercial usage of a test licence which is a no-no and afaik IS have, despite noises in the press, really accepted this and are making alternative plans

of course, strictly speaking, none of the "WiMax test licences" should have been granted in the first place - ICASA granted them purely on the basis of encouraging development in the industry
