Hi guys,

My brother is on a Cell C contract, which he's had for 2 years. Business Chat 400.

It's time for him to upgrade.

He went to a local Cell C store in our town and they showed him some phones, he didn't like them and I told him about the Nokia N95.

Cell C told him that he could choose "any phone", those were their words.

The Cell C store ordered the N95 for him, and their words were, "there's only one in our warehouse". Today he got a call that the phone is there, but unfortunately he can't have it, because he has to pay R800 more in order to get the phone.

I checked out a few deals from Vodacom and MTN and the likes and finally found this from a banner advertised on myadsl:
http://www.mobileone.co.za/special.asp?id=103

Look at the bottom, the third option from the very bottom. It says:
FREE Nokia N95
on a Cell C Business Chat 400
plus ONCE OFF FEE OF R499
@ R 682.50 pm x 24 months *
* all monthly mandatory charges included

So these guys can get it for R499 more, not R800.

If it is his time to upgrade, is Cell C within their rights to ask for a R800 payment? Or should they give the phone free?

I think they should give it free, period.

Any comments?

Edit: btw. they told him if he's not capable of paying the R800 now, he has to move up to a Business Chat 1000 package in order to get the N95 for R1200 a month, bunch of thieves!

I've been charged odd R100 or R200 fees when upgrading my contract. I think it's because you can upgrade every 20 months, so they're trying to make back the lost payments by disguising it as another fee...

That's a crock, he's waited 2 months already after his upgrade period at least, so stuff them.

Just cancel the contract and get a new one.

In hindsight, this is what I should have done with mine... *sigh*

The N95 Is a Fairly New Phone. The Best Way To Go Is For Him To Ask Them To See Their Pricing As Every Phone On Every Contract And All The Pay In Ammonuts Are There. And Paying In To Get R8500 Phone Well That's His Choice.

P.S. I Paid In R1500 To Get The Nokia 7250 When It First Came Out.

Man let me tell you sum thing.

A few years back a friend told sold me a sony 300 something - it was a nice phone at the time. Before cameras etc. It was cheap.

Turns out he knew a distributor of cell phones. This guy basically sold him phones for 100% or more less than what you could get it for by service providers and stores.

So yes they (our service providers in general) must have a huge mark up on everything. Also if you consider the volumes of phones per provider, they should be getting huge discounts as well.

When I upgraded with cellc this year I wanted a 3G HTC I could get it - but like with every other phone I wanted - it was out of stock :-( !? I then settled for a K800I which I am also happy with - the very last one in SA according to them.

So yes but I agree with you I cant help but get the feeling og being ripped of in some way.

Didn't see the replies here.

He's decided to give Cell C the boot and he's switching to Vodacom in a few weeks ;) Number portability is a blessing in disguise :p
