I am thinking of getting the galaxy s4 deal that cellc has on offer.
Is cellc really that bad or are all the networks problematic.

I have virgin mobile currently, and went through a lot of pain with them.

No use having a cool phone running on 2g

If you are having network issues with virgin mobile (who run on the Cell C network) you will probably have the same Cell C.

MTN has very good deals at times but they can be slow to get signed up with. Take DJs case or me having to wait 8 working days to get my phone.

Vodacom has OK deals but decent service and signup is super easy and efficient normally.

Cell C is "ok" if you can deal with having your call go through on the 2nd or 3rd attempt, not being reachable at all times or if you don't care about accessing the internet/data on your phone when you need to.

If you have a Samsung/Android device, you have a better chance of getting it to work as the one fix thread here has the option to toggle it to use another frequency, which seems to work better. For IOS devices, you cannot change that setting.

So if you change frequency is it as good as being in say vodacom?

Yes it's that bad. Even with the data fix I still get booted off the network with alarming regularity.

The quality of their network largely depends on your location. As for me I'm very happy with them as I get what I pay for

From Randburg to Roodepoort I get pretty good reception and data speeds, but going south (like Alberton) the coverage gets weak and the network has a tendancy to drop you (the airplane-mode app posted on myBB for android helps there to keep my network connected).

As has been said, it totally depends on where you are. Personally I'm porting away from CellC to Vodacom because it's just that bad in my area.

My experience with them is better than my experience with Vodacom and 8ta. Vodacom constantly drops my calls. My wife on cellc has way less issues. My cell c data cards far out perform my Vodacom and MTN datacards. I guess its location, location, location with mobile companies, but here in EL my experiences (and that of my clients)... is mostly positive.

They are definitely bad. I have Cell C for my ipad and it cannot even compare with Vodacom.

My colleague has cell c and he has issues constantly. His speeds and phone signal are always poor and he hits multiple dead spots throughout the day.

Do yourself a favour...pay the extra R100 or R150 a month for Vodacom and get some proper service. It is expensive compared to Cell C but my latest speedtest vs my colleagues tells it all and justifies the price.
Download 9mbs
Upload 1.83mbs
Ping 47

vs his download which struggled to exceed 1mbs.

However, if you are ok with bad download speeds and have a strict budget, go with Cell C. Its not the end of the world but I can guarantee that it will frustrate you. My colleague makes do but he has added loads of expletives to his vocabulary.

Not really. I used to get disconnects and no data throughput across the street from their head office in Sandton.

Fixed that problem by porting back to MTN.

Vodascum contract has ended. Waited to port to Cell C. With all dis negativity, dont want to raise my blood pressure. Had to deal with Scummeel and screw. nearly had a triple bypass.

And that means?

Of course it's location. Why else would mine be fine and people in other areas be bad?

I cannot tell you how aggravating it is saying "what was that?", "say again" and "sorry please repeat" over and over again.

When my cell rings my heart drops. :(

we just did some testing with some new equipment specifically designed to test networks, Cell C results were horrible...so yes, it seems it is that bad.
