Is it just me or is building a descent gaming rig ridiculously expensive these days?

Problem with the Wii is, the games are crazy expensive :( Currently I'm contemplating rather getting a 32" LCD TV, xBox360 and that logitech g25 steering wheel :D Of course, the TV's a bit out of my price range at the moment, but the xbox is doable. Just need a descent bundle to become available.

Indeed....And I know I am gonna get sick of the bundled sports pack pretty quickly and then it will just sit there...:(

Very probable. That's what happened with my PS2, but to be fair, I bought it near the end of its life. Finished GT4 and kicked some arse in Tekken but the games started looking dated and they were mostly still expensive, even though they were old. The xbox is still sort of new and the titles pretty, so it might be a better investment with regards to entertainment value.

I just like the novelty value of the Wii - it is lots of fun. They must bring the damn price down and bring out some newer, cheaper games already!

As of yesterday, I've spent just over R30000 in over 2 years building my system up. I'm just waiting for my last parts to arrive from Prophecy, and I'll be set to go.

My main killers were the 24" BenQ, and the 8800GTX. And the Intel Q9450 come to think of it. Yet my system isn't totally up to what I want, I only have 400 gigs hard drive space, and I still want a tv card, and perhaps 4 more gigs of ram. Also want to get equipment so I can join the Cape Town WUG.

Yes, the cost has been insane. Yet is was my dream when I started, and I don't think I'll ever be able to do it again, so I bought something to last. While it's not cutting edge anymore, it will play almost every game at the full 1920x1200, except for Crysis. And that is all I really need.

Luckily I don't have a wife or girlfriend or things like that, so that is how I used my cash.

Agreed. A friend of mine has one and it's nice to play with without being very antisocial. Think I'll wait a while and get myself a good camera first, then, when I move into my flat next year, I can get a new tv, a good chair and the xbox along with a mini-fridge and a microwave. All the modern man needs :D

Indeed...Fridges and stuff cost almost as much as an X-Box - even the cheapest ones :(

You can get 8GB DDR2-1066 (if I recall correctly) for about R2,000 from Rectron ;)

And I'm sure you can settle for an nForce 650i chipset instead of the 780i? Especially since it's been plagued by problems...

+1 on that. Why even consider 1200RAM when you have the Q6600 listed? Honestly....

Because I chose the 1200 when I had another Quadcore in there and forgot to change it when I swopped to the Q6600. Again, as stated earlier, I quickly assembled those specs without doing much research at all into the actual hardware, just to get an idea on price.

Havoc, did that pc have a 22" LCD screen? I'm willing to bet not ;)
Of course not (Excl screen). I just wanted something that plays the latest games but didn't break the bank.

If you want 22" + RAID + Quad then you'd better have the $$$. No way around that.

Yeah sure, just use the DVI connection on the xbox and hook it up directly to the screen. Friend of mine uses his Samsung LCD like that since he only has a CRT TV still as well.

Ps. Apparently you need to buy a VGA cable with a DVI converter but that's just from a quick google

So I'll be able to use a 22" samsung lcd monitor for the xbox360 instead of my "old style" tv. Will there be a quality difference >

Glordit, to be fair, it's a complete new pc.

Specs as follow:

Samsung 2232GW
LG GSA-H55N , 20x - DVD burner
Coolermaster Stacker 690
Logitech 963416 G25 racing wheel
Zalman CNPS9700L - CPU cooler
zalman ZM-MFC2 - Fanbus
Logitech 967674 Oem internet 350 keyboard
Logitech 931352 Mx518
Enermax Noisetaker 600w
2 x Seagate barracuda 7200.11 st3500320as , 500gb
Inno3D 9800GTX 512MB
XFX N780-iSH , nForce 780i SLi
4 x Kingston Hyper-X KHX9600D2/1G , 1Gb/1024mb ddr2-1200
Intel Core2 Quad Q6600

That's the expensive setup.

lol, IMO all the stuff listed in bold is a waste of money ;) Then... thats just me. Still, there is cheaper componets you can buy that will give you about the same results.

Is it just me, or is the 600W PSU maybe a little on the small side?
Once again, I'd get 800 RAM if taking the Q6600 and <maybe> 1066 for the 1333FSB Quad.

You'd have to overclock the Q6600, it uses a 1,066MHz FSB as standard. But once you overclock it to 3GHz then the FSB ticks along at 1,333MHz.

Then again, then you'd have to use DDR2-667 for the 1:1 RAM:FSB ratio ;)

No no, what I meant was that using a 1200 RAM on the Q6600 (1066) would be ~ as fast as using 800 on it. Correct?
