Is it just me or is building a descent gaming rig ridiculously expensive these days?

No no, what I meant was that using a 1200 RAM on the Q6600 (1066) would be ~ as fast as using 800 on it. Correct?

I'd expect the faster RAM to be faster, but probably not fast enough to justify the price difference :p

Would be interesting to see some benchmarks regarding this.

Yeah, it would be, but with this guy complaining about prices, I'd rather go for 800 than 1200 which is what, almost double the price?

/hijack :D

what are the % gains by using 'faster' RAM? Like I have the 667, so would it be beneficial to get the 800 or not?

I'd still go for the 8GB DDR2-1066 for ~R2,000 :D

Yup! played CoH on 8Gb's of ram [took all of our 2GB stix and loaded into a freinds PC :D]

load times = s u p e r - f a s t :)

@ Helix, not too sure currently running at 800 and with a max of 1333, dont think there would be a Huge jump in speed but worth getting I suppose cause DDR2-800 is hella cheap!

You should not wasting money on DDR1200, you think they will make very noticable difference in game? And the motherboard, why buy a SLi MB if you only get one 9800GTX? How much will you save if you change to normal stuff on the above two?

+1 Some things sound veery cool to have but have very little performance inhancement :)

Yeah, I see the GX2 quad SLI setup gives improvement, but not NEARLY R7100+- improvement.

Revising the system to all the bits recommended and without the blingbling, You'll clock in around R13-14k, including the screen. Not too bad. Could probably get it even cheaper if you shopped around a bit more.

Ditto :p There's an article on Guru3D about the quad sli setup. It really sucked for them with increases of around 8 fps over a single GX2, in Crysis, which is weird because even they say that people normally get way better scaling. If I had the money though, I'd probably just get one GX2, a nice and big screen and some more RAM or something.

500W Gaming Case
Microsoft Vista Ultimate
Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4Ghz
Intel Johannesburger LGA 775 Motherboard
2x 1024MB DDR2 667 Memory
500GB SATA HDD
Samsung DVD Writer
Internal 52-in-1 Card reader
8800GTS 640MB PCI-E Card
Keyboard, Mouse & internal modem
Creative Inspire M4500 4.1 Speaker System

This costs R12539-00 at Sybaritic pre-build, so it is maybe even cheaper to build yourself. I don't know that motherboard but if you can don't get one with SLI...I have found I never use more than one PCI-E slot...it's a waste of money and time.

Now you could easily throw away Vista Ultimate...who needs it for gaming. Also who needs that card reader.
I also don't think RAID is worth it for a gaming rig, unless I am missing the point you only really need RAID for a server. Otherwise for gaming the rig won't last more than 2 years so why worry about your data?

As for a 22" monitor I bought one for around R2000 once from Kalahari. It's an LG and works perfectly for me. Shop around and you will see good deals. Actually I got it for around R1600 because I had a credit with Kalahari...they owed me for a christmas purchase gone wrong. :p

EDIT: I think the 8800GTS's are generally way too overpriced. So rather change the card...you can get more bang for your buck with a 8800GT or 9 series.

Don't need the speakers either as I have a rather nice set of headphones. Waiting for the new nVidia cards would probably be wisest. I'd rather grab 800MHz memory instead of the 667, but apparently that's quite cheap these days as well. The case...I'd rather get a good quality PSU with something like the above mentioned stacker case. R1800 for them though. So there we have it, R13-14k! (The Samsung 22" is a must in my opinion...it's just so shiny and lovely and things *drool*)

You are depressing me now :( because one of these days I need to upgrade :p

It is looking expensive :( not so long ago 5k could get you a good PC easily.
Then again Quad Core is still new stuff. A state of the art PC would/will always cost an arm and a leg. Usually though you find a mid-range PC always handles the job well provided you know what you are doing. Before I upgrade I will overclock the shyte out of what I have now just to buy some more time :)

Consoles are nice, fun and reliable-ish. I just don't have a taste for them :/

Whats a good price for the Samsung 22"?

I know Buy247 have a special at the moment for a Samsung 22" 2243BWX Wide LCD. R2899-00 incl. If that is a good price for that model and brand then go for it :)

Vensters, that's all well and good, but which one to go for? The one's newer, you reckon it's worth the ~R150 premium?
